I know the upper Arrow quite well but this was my first experience of Whittern. A first always presents challenges and on this occasion they were exacerbated by a continuous, strong downstream wind.

Throughout the afternoon there was a significant and prolonged Mayfly hatch. I watched as they bounced vulnerably on the water expecting the trout to latch onto them but it simply didn't happen. Only once did I encounter a fish picking them off but he was close to a shaded bank protected by low hanging vegetation as well as that annoying wind. I tried but failed.

When all my other tactics for bringing fish to the surface came to naught I resorted to trundling a heavy nymph through some of the deeper runs. This produced two (11-12") beautiful trout. Nice fish but I was left feeling rather frustrated. I'd failed to make the best of a day that seemed full of promise - I guess that's part of the enduring challenge and why we love the sport. "I'll be back!"

Beaten again by the wind on the Arrow. A few fish rising between the bridges as I arrived at 3pm and one WBT 9" to hand on a mayfly pattern. Increasing wind seemed to put the fish down and all very quiet at 7:30 and didn't feel like a late rise was on the cards so called it a day.

I found this beat hard work as all the easy access is where fishing is prohibited leaving a lot of undergrowth and quite a bit of barbed wire to battle through. One trout on a shrimp pattern and a salmon parr on a PTN.

Fish 4-14 inches, mainly on GH-HE, less fish rising than on last visit. Two large 1lb+ fish from same pool, one sighted and caught from tail, one from the neck. Top half of beat fished. Some mayfly around, not much interest yet but it won't be long.

14 x 4-12 inch fish plus a good few salmon parr. Mostly on CDC dries and the odd nymph from faster water, fish rising in every pool, great afternoon fishing.

First time on this beat and was impressed. Very nice area to fish. Now that's out the way to the fishing.. rain, sunshine, then the most horrendous downstream wind made my three weight almost impossible to use. 6 of the eight fish came in the first hour to size 18 f -fly then the wind strengthened. As I could not turn my fly over nymphed heads of pools picking off another two and decided to call it a day. Lovely beat, shame wind ruined catch return.

Day 3 of 4 day trip and it was cold and blowing a gale over the Whittern beat. I tempted two nice 12" WBT up to my dry but otherwise a difficult and disheartening fish. Spent most time avoiding a hook in the face and untangling wind knots.
