Very tough day fishing. Started on one of the upper steep banked swims. Was feeder fishing targeting barbel . Put a decent amount of ground bait in the river and tried a variety of hook baits but could buy a bite. Change hook link lengths and switched our for a small weight but still couldn’t find the fish. So around 12ish moved to one of the downstream swims - very snaggy so switched to trotting and caught two of the smallest chublet I’ve ever caught - barely the width of my hand. Returned to an upstream swim in the evening and went back to feeder fishing and ledgering. Casting one rod near and one far. After 11.5hrs with no bites I finally hooked into a fish. And boy was it worth persisting for. Double figure Wye barbel - that’s what I came for!

The wind often made for less than ideal presentation today but, in the lulls, some fish rose and pale wateries and some Yellow Mays appeared from time to time. Had all of the fish on a size 18 pale HE Ducks Dun, a pattern which, as usual at this time of year, took risers and non-risers. With some falling leaves and morning mist, autumn is with us for sure and more of today's falling leaves will bring more fish food with them in the foam lanes in the coming weeks. Bring it on! As elsewhere on our rivers, low water levels allowed me to get to a few usually less accessible spots. Lots of the current prolific 9-10" year class of grayling with few 12 -14" fish too.

A tough day. Was hard to find a good spot to fish so ended up in the shallower part of river. 2 eels and a small chub, plus lots of canoe traffic. Still the sun shined and views were nice.

I was fishing the stretches in the first field after the woods. Chub were steady all day. I caught one barbel in the afternoon and the second on the last cast of the day, just as it was getting dark.

A pleasant day on a low, clear river. Not much rising; but steady progress, fishing the stream, and working up river. None of the flurries of fish that you associate with this beat at this time of year; but enough happening to keep me occupied. Used the same Klinkhammer all day, Size 16, tan with a fluorescent pink sight bob, expertly tied by my good friend Andy Miller. I don't think the fluorescent pink makes any difference to the efficacy of the fly, but it certainly makes it easier to see. The Grayling were mostly in the 9-10 inch year class, with a couple of better fish. The trout was a clonker - 15 inches long, and as fat as a pig
