Well opted for the lovely Hergest Court beat , parked up at half nine and at the same time a white truck pulled up from the WUF , had a nice chat with Louis and still doing work on this beat ,but assured him I'll only be fishing from the bottom up!! Looks like quite a bit more fencing work to be done here and stiles too I believe !!! Chappy I spoke to later did say Stiles are also being put up near the weir !! Spot on I thought !!! Much needed!!
Anyway , onto the fishing , good fishing this morning , nymphs , both flashback PTN , and baetis nymph hit hard this morning , fish ranging from five to eleven inches , spot on !!! No interest in dries as only saw one rise , and that was at midday !!! Some LDO's showing at half twelve but I was wrapping things up at half one so didnt get any dry fly action.!!!
Still a fun four hours sport , nine Arrow beauties to the net and two long range releases , spot on.!! Rivers at a lovely height just now , and I may give the Kington beat a quick bash one evening this week if weather permits !!!
Be excellent here when the WUF chaps have completed all the work !! And some cracking fencing and tree kickers now in situ , great for the trout ,lots of hard work done !! A fun morning, great sport as always , lovely job . . . .

Arrived to fish for an hour after a day on the lower river. Beat looked scenic as usual and conditions promising. Got a firm take just by the tip of the Rock. Had a dogged fight and a 14lb cock fish swam away strongly on release.. Floating line, 5 ft fast sink poly and smallish conehad Cascade. Had a blank season last year so felt especially good. The tug is still the drug !

A cold and bright day greeted us in this very slow burner spring. Water level was good after a recent freshet. I caught my first ever fish on a partridge and orange casting upstream to a likely holding spot. A localised hatch of iron blues bought the fish to the surface, and I had a further 4 on a dry adams. This was a very pleasing spell, casting to rising fish is such an enjoyable experience. Sadly the hatch petered out as the wind increased and the Usk returned to its challenging normal state.
My friend JJ took 4 on nymphs , commenting that he had only seen the odd sporadic rise. All fish were in good condition and the majority were around the 1 lb mark, they gave a great account of themselves and all were returned safely
Great show of nature today, with Kingfishers, dippers, wagtails, Martins, Kites, Buzzards, and Sandpipers all in evidence.
I think I'm ready for Spring to really get going, not sure I should be wearing 6 layers when fishing in May!
A very enjoyable day in a special place.

A lovely bit of water near Talybont on Usk. We arrived shortly before midday to find the river very quiet. By midday, a trickle of brook dun started coming off, which lasted all afternoon, allowing for non stop action up and down the beat until 4.30pm. Only two dry fly patterns were needed all day. We nearly lost count of the number of fish caught, but luckily the camera kept us honest. Two fish over 2.5lbs and most over 2lb. Make sure you've got strong nylon and good knots!

11-3:30. Chose dry fly, greenwells glory and olive, water still skinny but slight colour. Hergest almost unrecognisable after the past year’s turbulent weather, still beautiful and will always be a favoured beat. No success in raising but took the two rises that were seen, 6 and 10 ins. Both returned safely.

Another very enjoyable trip to that beautiful river, which although carrying extra water showed no signs of fish. Alas no salmon on this occasion.
I did however catch a 2lb rainbow (flying c) which certainly got the heart rate up, great colours too.
Looking forward to returning soon,
PVD
