It was a beautiful day to be out on the river. The water was at a good height and pretty clear. There were very few rising fish, despite quite a few blue olives and yellow may dunns. I did my usual trick of hooking loads of fish, several of them fairly large up to 3lb - and lost them all! I don't know what I'm doing wrong; I've lost about 20 large trout in the last few weeks.
But the big news has to be, once again, not a single salmon of any kind seen.

River 0.9m approx and brown, and dropping. Looked OK and started at a swim next to another angler who told me that these swims had produced a good number of barbel recently. Unfortunately not today! We both only caught one each and mine was only about 1lb ( nice to see though) and then nothing so we had to move. My next swim I know always holds barbel but again I struggled for the rest of the day with only one more barbel ( nice size approx. 9lb) and a chub . It did not help the sun shining down on all the river and straight in my face all morning . It was only when the clouds started coming over in the pm that I caught these fish but only over a very short period of time . Unfortunately I had to leave at 5.00pm and I know the fish often switch on here after 6.00pm.
Also the river was very brown and starting to speed up as it dropped increasing the boiling nature of the swims. This stretch is a pleasure to be on and even better in cloudy/wet weather , when the river is high( over 1 metre) and after 6.00pm!

Fished all the pools but nothing seen or caught. A bit of a surprise really as water was perfect.

Awesome day on the Wye, fish caught on the pellet feeder method, I love this place, stunning surroundings, only about 30 canoes all day not the 300 I was expecting. Best barbel was 9lb best chub just shy of 5lb.

The water was slightly coloured but very clear, your notes said it was overgrown, but really that's an under statement, the only way to fish it is to climb out and into the field and try somewhere else, you can not wade as the trees hang down to the water surface, I used a 5ft 6in rod even that was to long.
No fish caught as I think sliding down the bank to get in spooked the fish, and then you got to try and get out.
Never mind back to the Irfon ,next time.

Had booked 2 rods on Abercynrig and 2 on Dinas, swapping round half way through the day. Started out with high hopes as it was a lovely day but somewhat disappointed with the outcome. Not sure what the problem was - perhaps not fishing the nymphs deep enough - but it was hard fishing. Tried dries (more successful later in the day) and nymphs on both duo and French leader. Nothing big was caught although 3 larger fish were hooked and lost on dry sedges in rougher water.
