Very cold (water at 5 °) and the water was a little high but most beats were fishable. No fish seen by me but my fellow angler managed to catch one from the Vanstone in the morning. The beat is very well maintained with steps into and from the beats making life easy. The maddox stream fished particularly well at this height and my second trip through was rewarded with a lively seatrout of about 4lbs.

Fished this afternoon, but it was hard going. It felt as if there was no life about what's so ever . Third time out for me and although early on in season, it is looking bleak I must say

6 x trout 6-10 inches, Gold Bead hare's Ear. End of a pleasant, sunny afternoon with lots of wild daffodils out in the fields and a few fish actually rising.

2 x trout 8-9 Gold Bead Hare's Ear. A quick walk up the Cannop Brook on a cool and cloudy morning and managed to catch a brace while I was at it. Compared to Bideford Brook yesterday, the early spring storms have done a lot more damage. The whole wood looks like a giant's playground, with fallen trunks lying in all directions, but especially over the stream. As a result there will be much scrambling up and down the banks to fish this one this season. All the same, there will be plenty to go at when it warms up.

9 x trout 6-10 inches, Goldbead Hare's Ear. Severn tributaries open today, and this is one of three local to me. I had to fish early so started in a frost - not quite ideal - with upstream nymph, and found a few fish in the runs. Surprised to see one fish rising. The stream is looking somewhat battered by late winter floods (the last one went over 2 metres) and there is one fallen branch which necessitates getting out of the channel and going round by the bank. The channel itself is clear but look out for barbed wire on the banks where fences have been knocked down.

Well observed the restrictions, stayed local and obviously fished on my own . Opted for the Noke beat , bit cold this morning so wasnt in a mad rush too get there , arriving at about half ten ; bit of sun too then slightly warming things up !! I did see some insect life at about midday too . . . .

Wow here has had a severe haircut , masses of trees down hopefully improve this beat no end come Summer time . . . A cracking job done I must say,.although on the first field electric fencing is around it now so take care !!!

On to the fishing, only selected deep holes today and during my quick two hour session was nice to hook up into two brownies, both about eight inches on tungsten nymphs , cracking stuff !! Did for a time have lump on , had a feeling it was one of Nokes good grayling !! Boy did he put a bend in the rod !!!

Anyway a fun two and a half hours albeit still flowing a bit pokey here . Was reading .39 on the gauge last night when I looked . Needs another good week of no rain me thinks !! Somehow I doubt that's going to happen . . . Anyway a nice opening sortie on the Wild Streams , look forward to my next session , happy days!!

Great to be out on a lovely early spring day. A couple to nymphs, but there was a 10-15 minute window at about 3pm when the trout switched on to March Browns and I had 3 takes of a big DHE style fly in 10mins, two stuck - best probably 15". A few minutes later - all over. Well worth the couple of miles walk!
