I checked water temp with W&U and found the temp gauge on the Wye - 18.5’ so warm but just about below the guidelines.
I parked behind the pub and entered the river below the footbridge.
Fishing from 6-9pm there was a strong hatch - no idea what but I tried to match the colour - small dry brown fly.
Casting was pretty straightforward inspite of a gusty wind.
There were small fish rising - I caught 3 small ones, lost several similar, moved a few more and then with final cast of the evening caught a beauty that had been leaping at the weir in the white water. Made my day.
Walking back down the stream there is a metal gate on the left bank which brings you out on the main road above the pub. Obviously I had a beer.

Plenty of water in river but summer conditions have made fishing difficult. Lots of light tugs but just 4 fish by end of day. One of 14” on a klinkhammer. Fish were really starting to rise above the bridge around 8 pm but I had to go!
Beautiful place to fish

A big plus on arrival as ground dry and hard so able to drive down the treeline and park by the river halfway alone the beat. Walked the beat and good to see number of swims cut out upstream, access to all the swims is excellent with strimming been done with a balance between convenience for the angler and maintaining that natural/wild feeling.
We fished 3 swims downstream of the trees. Garlic meat was the go to bait accounting for all but 1 of the chub, the other and the 2 barbel succumbing to paste wrapped green lipped mussel 15mm boilie. Chub to 4lb and barbel 4-5lbs.
River seemed low and clear, blistering hot day with factor 50 not really working. 1 angler on far bank in latter part of day but he obligingly chose not to fish opposite us.

After a Chub a cast a couple of miles downstream the previous day I was surprised to only manage two in sixteen hours from Sugwas. Water level low and only two swims fishable on the top stretch, one of those required an underhand cast. So much river, so few swims. I might give it it another try when the water levels improve.

Given the hot , windy and sunny conditions with the level at 0.1m at RoW, this was always going to be a challenging day for the 3 of us fishing.
The video on the WUF website overstates how easy it is to fish and most pegs required above average agility. The meadow area does not have many accessible swims. Not much sign of recent bank maintenance. Note the opposite bank appears to be some form of club water with numerous cut out swims. 3 anglers fished opposite and we did not notice them catch anything
Having said that 4 chub were caught on the float , the best going around 5Lbs and the day was made by a very nice 7Lb thickset barbel that went off like a train.
Despite the barbel, this is probably not a fishery we would be returning to .
