Had a great day on the Edw today.
Slow start and some flies coming off but took a while to find flies that worked. Fished the duo mostly and more than half to the CDC and deer hair and a few less on a peeping caddis 2mm beaded nymph. 5 or 6 were real fighters with fish to around 10”.
On the down side I also caught almost every tree but only lost one. Gained one from a branch I snagged where someone else broke off.

I hadn't fished this stretch of the Edw before so I thought I'd give it a go.
On arrival the river was running a little low and very clear, the weather was warm and cloudy day with very little wind at all.
I started off on the dry and had one very early on, this prompted me to stay on the dry for probably a bit too long.
When I eventually switched to the nymph I started catching, taking fish from the faster runs.
I have to say I found it very difficult trying to catch fish from the slower pools, even with a very cautious approach once the fly hit the water it sent the trout racing round the pool.
I saw far more than I caught, but still had a nice day on this very picturesque river.

River was an unattractive brown colour and quite a lot of weed beds now. Weather overcast and warm. Started with feeder and pellet but not a touch so changed to meat. This brought one barbel and (inevitably) a couple of eels. Moved to some faster water and had two more barbel and four smallish chub, again on meat. Barbel were all around the 6lbs mark. The winter floods of about three years ago destroyed access to many swims below the island and the bottom field is infested with campers, so there is now much less readily fishable water.

Really nice beat. Started on the fishing hut swim at 5am. Tried pellet/feeder and stick float. Had no bites by 11am so moved into the wooded area. Bit of a trek up the hill with all my tackle but well worth it. Was intending to try different swims out in that area but started catching regularly from first swim so stayed there. Fished the furthest swim into the woods (would be the first swim you come too if you could access it from the other side) which is just where it gets deep after all the fast water. Could have had a chub a cast but just didn’t strike on the smaller bites and tried to wait it out for barbel. Managed to get 4 barbel and lost a couple to hook pulls. The chub are a really nice size with most being over 4 pound. Caught a few of the chub on the drop as they grabbed the bait as soon as the feeder hid the water. A very lovely beat and will definitely be back. Would try and travel a bit lighter next time though so can five around. Plenty of great looking swims, bends and features to fish.

4 Barbel, 10 Chub
