River low, bright and sunny. Dredged a perdigon through the rocky channels, no success. Saw 1 trout rise in pool of beat below, Fly life plentiful, lots of midge and a few yellow mays, some sedge. Saw a kingfisher and red kite. Unfortunately no fish. Fished my club beat on Irfon after and had 6 trout on dry.

Half decent day considering the blustery winds, so made for the pools on the bends for some shelter and fished Klink and dink. All fish apart from one fell to a GBGRHR, thankfully I didn’t lose it as it was the only one I had in the box. Must make some more.
A few more mayfly about than last week, but these fish still haven’t switched on to them.
Thanks to the Wye and Usk Foundation.

Lovely day but a little windy, sunny and river level low. Plenty of fly life but little sign of feeding fish. 2 brown trout, 1 on nymph from the deeper water and 1 sub surface. Saw an otter in the evening so moved!

I have not fished the Edw for some years. It remains a very beautiful river although I may have forgotten just how overgrown parts of it can get by this time of year. I'm not sure I chose the best day either; it was windy and pretty chilly. After two or three hours of slow fishing, I decided to cut my losses and head down to the main river...

Having fished the Edw for two or three hours in the morning, I headed to Abernant at about 11:30. I was hopeful the fishing would be better which indeed it was, the downside being that this very open stretch was much more exposed to the stiff northwesterly breeze that made any upstream casting very difficult. But I had some success with nymphs and spiders fished down and across. Almost all the fish came from the slightly more sheltered upper half of the beat. Though mostly small, there were some cracking fish among them in really lovely condition. The best was just over a pound and came to almost the last cast of the day at the very bottom of the beat. There were two very amiable chaps, both of whom took a keen interest in what I had (and hadn't) caught. Needless to say, they had stories of the huge fish they had seen rising only the other day!

There were a very few mayfly hatching which makes very little sense to me. What would be the point in hatching if so few other mayfly are at it at the same time? I should have thought, like fishing, it's all about being in the right place at the right time.

Fished upper section from the Trout Inn. Access over fence into field (?). There is a very deep hole just at the entry point to the beat. Fish all came from one riffle on small gold head pheasant tail nymph under a pale bodied klink. One mayfly spotted, a few small upwings. Very clear water. A few trees down further up the beat, but generally easy wading and a lovely beat.
