Well it wasn't for lack of trying. Gave it a good five hours with weighted pink shrimp, small nymphs, Klink and dink, vladi worm, etc. but to no avail. Hard going at times with lots of scrambling in and out of the river. Also new to this Canadian is fishing to a gallery of curious sheep and suspicious cattle!

First time fishing Middle Hill Court. River high and coloured with some debris coming down the middle though not unfishable, had to stand and hold rod all day as nowhere to put a chair on the steep slippery banks. Fished the slacker water near the bank, all fish caught on luncheon meat. One Barbel 9 pounds. An enjoyable day, will return when river is at normal level.

Slightly mirky water and quite deep in places so had to wade very carefully but a lovely beat. A couple of takes on a black head hares ear under a brown/grey klinkhammer but couldn't get them in. Unable to identify fish type. I will be returning sometime!

spent quite a bit of the day exploring this beat , I parked near the falls at the bottom end which means a lot of walking to the top ( and climbing when you get there ! ) conditions much better today, no wind or leaves but river still up and fast making wading difficult. fishing also very difficult with grayling to 13" and oos trout to 12" ( spoke to one angler the day before who blanked,) so I guess I didn't do too bad. had to miss out on two fields on the way back due to a rather large bull near the water.

Area:Monnow

Beat:Skenfrith

Fishing:Winter Grayling

River a little coloured and pushing through. Did not bring wading staff so in and out of water at safe entry/ exit points. Would have preferred to wade the whole beat, as other anglers suggest they've done in Skenfrith beat feedback pages. More time flies in/on water, less time scrambling up and down soft banks in chest waders.
Fished klink n dink and later two goldheads. Missed two takes. New to the Monnow so may not have found the best spots.
Very attractive landscape and good info from WUF
PS Wish grayling were as easy to hook as autumn leaves in the river, would have had dozens. Will give it a go next trout season.

Did not fish. River just shy of 3m above normal. I’m not a good flood fisherman if I’m honest.

hav`nt fished the middle beat of the preserve before, very nice stretch of water. river up a little and pushing through very fast . strong winds causing difficulty in presentation ( euro nymphing ) and lots of leaves in the water not helping either. did manage to find a few fish with grayling to 13" and several oos trout. a word of warning... if its very wet under foot do not attempt the track to the parking spot unless you have a 4x4 !

Heavy rain overnight- river high and chocolate brown, certainly would'nt want to wade & casting a fly for grayling seemed a waste of time so did'nt even put a rod together. In the right conditions the beat looks like it could be fantastic- alot of water to cover in a day & the owner obviously puts time and effort in- nice looking hut and well maintained paths.
