Very nice beat with the added advantage of vehicle access along most of bank. Just a-shame that the drive to the 5 possible swims passes by 3/4 of the bank side totally overgrown and only accessible by mountain goats .On that note we do realise this is down to the landowners to address and not W&U . Fish caught feeder and various pellet Boilie combos . Bottom end faster water shallows offers lots of nursery stamp fish under your feet and occasional better ones (9lb10oz) and the hilarious spectacle of The Day Trip Canoeists capsizing as they exit rapids! Priceless and didn’t put the fish off.

It fished well but a good number of fish were thin with a few carrying argulus lice.

Having parked at the caravan park we made our way down to the river, and when you get your first look you see the true power of the river as it crashes through the upper falls on the beat.

Having walked downstream to the end of the beat we fished back upstream and at 4pm were facing a blank on the dry flies. Nymphs or wets may have produced fish, but with the season coming to an end for the dries, we were determined to catch off the top. In an act of desperation a grayling steel blue was attached, resulting in a grayling of around 12 inches. My fishing partner described it as like scoring a goal with your arse. They all count, especially when there's nothing on the board.

Persistence in some very typical Welsh weather produced a target fish as a wbt of around 12 inches came to a Grenwells Glory. The rocks on this beat are incredibly slippery and studs are a must, with us both only narrowly missing a dunking on a couple of occasions

Wye Fishing Weekend (Part 1)

If you cannot beat them, join them. After bumping into DC of West Hereford at the Elan Valley the previous Sunday, and quizzing him mercilessly on French Nymphing, I had a new 10ft 3wt rod in the car when we arrived at Doldowlod de bonne heure this morning, on what was to prove to be a fairly miserable day weather-wise; with showers on and off throughout - but not the sort of rain that got you all that wet. Started off at the bottom of the beat with another rod for a run of clonking Grayling on a nymph. Tackled up with the new rod up river after lunch; and christened it on my first proper cast (if you can call lobbing an 18 foot leader casting) with a Trout that must have gone all of 2lbs. A second Trout more or less immediately, with more good Grayling to follow from the pocket water at the top of the beat

The sun finally broke through as we were packing up for the 5 mile drive to the Hundred House at er,uhm, er, Hundred House (highly recommended - a bit basic but very good) for our overnight stop. Tres bonne

Good day on the creel, S and A sharing the fish between them. Really enjoyed the fishing his year despite the difficult conditions, many thanks to wye and usk for making such good water available.
