This was a cracking day. We concentrated most of our efforts on the lower part of the beat and caught steadily through most of the day. Conditions were helpful: much cooler than of late and helpfully overcast. The rain threatened for lunchtime never came.
Seeing the odd rising fish, we both began with dry flies. Although the fish rose to them, there were really only swirls at the fly and no solid takes. The most successful technique was fishing a team of nymphs and spiders downstream and this accounted for the vast majority of the fish. Most were in good condition although one trout did have some lice. The best grayling was around a pound and the best trout a lovely fish of about a pound and a quarter. This is a really great place to spend a day, especially if the fish are feeling cooperative.

Fished the bathers beat for a couple of hours around dusk. Plenty of small trout rising. 5 caught, mainly on a beaded nymph on the point. All returned. Never fished this beat before - absolutely stunning surroundings.

The river was coloured on my arrival but a few fish were rising as a few mayflies were coming off along with a few yellow may duns. Small olives were also in evidence. I caught all my fish on a size 14 parachute adams before lunch time when the rises dried up. I tried the nymph in the afternoon but with no further luck. I struggled to find the bottom of the beat and further directions would be helpful.

10 x trout 6-10 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. The water very low now and a lot of walkers on the path this afternoon, which didn't make life easy. A few natural mayflies still about, but trout more interested in a smaller pattern.

Conditions not as good as forecast. Wind dropped late morning and sun came out. Hard work. Fish caught all over, most ~12", one decent @17". had a few fall off as well. Didn't stay for the evening - no stamina.

Less than ideal conditions, extremely blustery and the glare was awful. Most trout 5-7", one corker chased the nymph out a riffle, roughly 9". Another 10 fish hooked but all came off, barbless hook was particularly slippy today. Hares ear nymph under a dry used, almost all fish from the heads of the pools. Not a touch in the first 2 hours, in fact nearly all fish from the upper half of the beat. No takers for the dry, and only 2 rises seen all day. First visit to this beat and it did not disappoint, didn't see a soul all day, beautiful landscape and a very decently sized stretch of water, didn't quite realise how far upstream I had fished and was absolutely knackered when I got back to the car. One thing I would say is it isn't clear the best way to return to the start of the beat, no obvious paths or styles in fields and overgrown banks make it impossible to walk alongside the river the entire way, leading to an obligatory cross-country stomp inland.

Access to river difficult due to high bank and cattle fence also surprised to see so much rubbish in the river (old tyres and farming plastic bags). Very little action during the day but I managed to catch 3 very small trout in the evening. I think £25 is overpriced for this sort of fishing.

Quite a windy day. Less surface feeding fish today than on my visit two weeks ago. Some mayfly still about.
