Salmon seen, but not caught. btw - I am not impressed by the beat notes provided (I had not fished at Chainbridge before). The notes describe the wading on most of the beat as relatively easy over the gravel riverbed. I found the wading at the top of the beat (Rock pool) to be slippery mud with large boulders - positively scary with today's fairly high water level (a foot and a couple of inches on the gauge at Usk). In the faster water lower down there is indeed some gravel in the gaps between the boulders, but not much. I fished only the left bank from the wood upstream.

Rain, rain and more rain. We tried everything with dry fly and nymphs, nothing worked. Almost no activity, only saw two fish rising; and a couple of salmons.
Even when the rain stopped, there was nothing we could do it seemed. We had an ok day, just very disappointing to come back empty handed!

Based on the amount of rain recently, I certainly feel lucky to have managed a day's guiding on the Wye. The gauge was showing a manageable 1.6 in the morning but was rising throughout the day. The three novices I was with caught a dozen or so small grayling between them using spiders and weighted flame-tails on the point – a Williams Favourite was working well in the slightly coloured water. Overall, it was a lovely day on the river amongst the pretty autumnal colours.

Another great day on this stretch of water with barbel ranging from 6 to 9lb 6oz and a chub of around 4lb (all caught on pellet). Weather conditions were favourable again with overcast sky's and light showers.

Raining when I arrived and started fishing at about 10am and still raining when I packed up at 4pm (relentless!). Despite this the river was fine and clear. Lots of fish rising that came to black gnats size 18 and micro caddis. I missed a fair few and had a better size grayling on a holy grail nymph. Typically the rain stopped as I drove away and as such I wished I had stayed on for the evening. However I was happy to have caught and just be out as the next day would had been a definite wash-off. Looking forward to returning.

No fish caught. I have previously caught quite a few fish here. Quite a few of the previous fish holding spots have disappeared. Lots of gravel has moved through and changed the holding places. The water was also very clear. Didn't see a single fish the whole time I was there. Lots of evidence of wild boar entering the water. Puzzled about where all the fish were!

one fish well over a pound in very good condition. Difficult stretch to fish because of heavy growth of vegetation.
