The river was lowish and being clear could well be testing conditions especially with an otter, goosander and cormorants all present, however chub succumbed to trotting and ledgering tactics. Only one angler on today and lost count on the amount of chub caught, >30 anyway. From 1.5lb to nearly 5lb and notable change in fish activity heading in to dusk. No barbel showed sadly, but an enjoyable day. The steps added to the heart attack hill are a welcome addition.

Beat:Upper Wye above Doldowlodd
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Decided to fish the Upper Wye from 10 till 2.30 and found the river much like everywhere else: clear and leg-chillingly cold at 8 degrees; just a handful of MBs and LDOs between 12 and 1, but no fish rising. Given the forecast north-easterlies and cold nights, it feels like it's going to take a while longer before the insects and fish liven up in the Wye and Usk catchments? By late morning all that was around were a few midge. In a long glide, I saw a oncer rise and, having located it, it took a size 18 pale hare's fur para emerger, and the first fish of the season proved to be a fit and fat 2.25lb 17" lady. Had a couple more on a Duracel variant. No trout by any method.
