Arrived after heavy rain the previous day/night to find the river a little up and carrying a touch of colour, the weather was now mild and mostly overcast and dry but the river was still freezing cold!
I had bought along a friend to introduce him to river trout fishing and wading as the river here offers very easy wading and has plenty of fish to go at so is a perfect venue for your first attempt.
We made our way to the very end of the beat with the intention of fishing our way back to the car and the Bell, shorty after we started fishing there was a short lived hatch of a fly I didn't recognise which rose just one fish, I find the far end of the beat rarely produces. The fishing was tough from here on with very sparse and sporadic hatchs not enough to bring the fish up. My friend did manage one trout in a pheasant tail nymph and managed to rise a fish to a Klinkhamer which came off shortly after, I had a grayling on a gold headed nymph.
A lovely day despite the tough fishing rounded off by a pint at the Bell to celebrate my fiends first wild brown trout.

First time on Whitney, river at a good height & running clear. Fished fly & spinner on beats 2 & 4, nice pools and enjoyed my first day of the season but no signs of a fish. One or two nice trout rising around lunch time.

Fished from 10.30 until 2.45. River running at 11 inches on the Brecon guage but the water much colder today at 6 degrees, when on Saturday it was 9 degrees. Several intervening frosty nights! A chilly, misty start but the sun eventually came out for a while late morning and the rain also duly arrived on cue, off and on, from 2 p.m. Not good. Had five fish all about 14”. Three on a flashback PTN, one on a March Brown emerger and another on a Grannom adult pattern. Some March Browns from about 2 till 3 pm, Grannom from 12.30 which trickled off, in some numbers at times, until about 2.30, and just a few LDOs along with the MBs. Not many fish rising at all. Hard going!

The rain didn’t help. But at least it wasn’t too wet for too long.

Excited delirium had almost set in as I made my way down the very eroded track to this hallowed secret Llyn. Was great to greet Bugeilyn with a slight ripple and overcast , with ominous clouds rolling over as I tackled up with a team of two , my home tied clan chief and a spider pattern , on my five weight rod , with a floating line . I began to fish just passed the lone Pine tree and had two savage takes , beautiful early season brownies, quickly admired , and then released back into the peaty cold water. Another two fish eagerly took the Clan chief , with feisty takes , another fifty yards up from the lone pine tree , again quickly released. By midday , the wind had picked up and I moved down closer to the boathouse , where I caught another two casting up to the inlet to Llyn Cwm Byr , aggressive hits again , one too the Clan Chief , and one to my spider pattern , all in all a fabulous five hours , great fun , and I shall sojourn once again to this fabulous hidden gem in search of the finny tribe !!!!!!! Cheers Llyn Bugeilyn shall catch up with you very soon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
