Fished the Usk on the Gwent AS water at Gilwern yesterday and today. Water still nine degrees and the Brecon gauge dropping from 1'1" to 1', so still pushing through. Sunny both days with a cold west / north-westerly yesterday, but much more still today. On both days very few olives were seen, there were what appeared to be returning Grannom from about 12.30 and then some March Browns from 12.45 until about 2 p.m. The MBs got some fish up to the top, but surprisingly few, with drifting duns and fluttering emergers frequently ignored. How bizarre! Had only eight fish over the two sessions, one on a Grannom adult pattern, one on a MB Duck’s Dun and the rest on a MB parachute emerger. All fish 13-15”, the 15” fish a well-conditioned 1.5lb. It was taken in a glide, with what proved to be almost today’s last chuck of the day at 3.15 p.m., having been spotted rising occasionally, latterly woofing down a sole, drifting March Brown Dun! Now why did it choose to take that MB when so many other fish had ignored similar tempting offers earlier in the day? Beats the hell out of me for sure! Thankfully, it then obligingly took my MBDD. Happy days, but hard fishing at the moment for sure.

No fish caught and no sign of fish activity. I did find the remains of a small pike. Could it have been washed down or are they resident in the slower bits behind the log jams?

Wall-to-wall sunshine doesn't generally make for the best fishing conditions, but was nonetheless welcome. Especially good to see newly arrived house and sand martins. Occasional March Brown and LDO but otherwise little hatching. Six brown trout to 12", mostly on nymph. All returned.

Sunny and warm on the Usk today. A few olives hatching at intervals from our start at noon until about 4 but not enough to bring fish to the surface in any number. Three trout to a beadhead hare's ear, two briefly hooked and lost and four or five plucks.

Forecast weather did not materialise. Flogged away for hours nymphing under a bright sun and in gin clear water. No chance and so it proved.
