Very peaceful beat. Targeted pike initially with lures, nothing happening! The river was coming through at quite a pace but still lots of good looking and accessible areas for the pike. Couple of big salmon spotted on the move and counted 60+ swans on the water at one time although they didn't cause any probs. Decided at 3pm to have an hour or so going for barbel or chub. First cast produced a screaming run, slide down the bank(not the first of the day) which resulted in a snapped rod and a lost fish. This was gonna be one of those days I thought!
With the last piece of luncheon meat I free lined it down the edge and straight away a bite and an immaculate chub of 3 lb saved the day....will be back

Absolutely stunning fishery- great looking river in amazing scenery. I must say though the amount of treefall in the water detracts massively from the experience. My estimation is 30/40% is totally unfishable. It almost seems like its deliberate the amount of trees blocking the water above the recording studio. This beat could be so much better with more effort put into it. My opinion is its not worth the money as things stand. This beat could be amazing but it needs a lot of attention.
(WUF note we hope to get to this over the winter)

A cold and foggy morning made the drive to the fishery challenging but good written directions made the trip easy. The river looked perfect for a fish even though the thermometer told me the air temperature was minus 2.
The banks where steep as described and slippery in the ice and wetness. This is a proper roaming beat with a new hour an hour there. Both fish took deadbaits close in. Good scrapping wild fish. One of nine pounds one of fourteen.
I will visit again in the spring with an eye on the salmon that were making there presence known mid river in a couple of pools.....

Blank. A frosty morning gradually evolving into a foggy afternoon. Water unusually clear by the standards of the Monnow. Absolutely nothing touched or seen in a river which seemed strangely dead. One reason to be cheerful was the corpse of a spawned out hen kelt found near the bottom of the beat. It would be good to see a few more of those in the Monnow.

A cold and foggy start to the day and the fishing matched the mood. However, as the day warmed (slightly), so did the fishing. Nymphing was the preferred tactic with a team of 3 flies, all catching at some point in the day (pink nymph, shrimp and squirmy worm). The fish ranged in size from about 3" to 12", so all in all good day's sport.

1' 5" on the Llanstephan gauge, air temperature 8deg river nice and clear. Only had a couple of hours today so keep thing simple with a single pink headed tungsten nymph. All the grayling were about 10" and the trout not much bigger. It was noticeable that all takes were quite subtle so quite possibly I missed some others.
