Last day and another lovely one, joined by the fourth member of our party P who enjoyed a catch of 5 Barbel, 6 Chub and a pound and a half Brown Trout! A at last caught more than son J with 11 Barbel and 4 Chub, I weighed in with 10 with the biggest of the week a fish of exactly 9lbs.
We've had a great four days on a truly beautiful river. Many thanks to the landowner who we spoke to briefly and was pleased to hear of our catches and especially to the Wye and Usk for giving us the opportunity.

Spent a very enjoyable day on this beat with Oliver Burch. Bright conditions, water clear and a downstream wind. Not a great deal rising. Had 4 grayling to 14" and one trout of 10" and a number of salmon parr on spiders and grey duster.

Lovely beat. Jonathan [Morris] is a fantastic instructor and a wonderful companion for a day on the water. He helped me fish with confidence and I felt we were fast friends by day's end. I will be back to fish your impressive resource. Did not touch or see a salmon. PMB.

All small fish caught on a nymph and all returned. Fished the middle of the day only with plenty of natural fly around and the occasional fish rising but no joy with a dry fly.

Beat:Pwll y Faedda near Erwood

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

9 x grayling 10-16 inches, 11 x trout 6-8 inches, various dry flies. A midday session with 11 inches on the gauge and a distinctly chilly east wind blowing. Virtually no natural rises but, as is often the case with grayling, they could be enticed up by continually floating an artificial over their heads. Grayling Steel Blue was the most useful pattern.

Had the one barbel on corn. Slow day but another lovely evening. Should have had 4 or 5 barbel really but had a bit of a nightmare, lost 3 fish and snagged up a lot when the fish were feeding at dusk.

My first trip to the Wye, river was low and clear. Fishing for Trout and Grayling Czech nymph style with various barbless bugs and nymphs, missed a few takes lost half a dozen fish but that's fishing. The quality of the grayling was superb the smallest 10" the majority 12-14" the best one 17" each one a hard fighting fish, all were returned. Sadly the trout failed to make an appearance. Wading was not easy and difficult in parts, chest waders and studded boots, another must in my opinion a wading stick which is an equally important piece of kit often overlooked. A very enjoyable day.
