A lovely beat which I have fished around 6 times now. The river was nearly down to normal level after very high conditions a few days previous. The day started in a very frosty fashion and bright sunshine. I waded as deep as I dare go and fished all the pools. Nothing rising or hatching. Fished teams of weighted nymphs but still struggled to get into good enough positions to present them properly. I picked up a superb trout of around 2lb on home tied tungsten head UV nymph at about 11 in the morning. Fished hard for a few more hours with no touches. Around 3 O'Clock with my legs numb to the core I finally picked up a grayling off about 1.5b. I fished for another hour then called it a day. Always nice fishing this beat and can't wait to come on my next holiday in a few months when the sun is shining and the flies are hatching and hopefully have a few on drys.

Using mackerel and bluey deabait.
Four Pike: 14lb, 13lb, 9lb and 5lb.

Lost two other fish. Water colour had cleared a little, so the fish were feeding better than they were a couple of days ago when I blanked.

The river and weather were perfect for grayling but as I had no maggots and the fly tackle was at home I fished for chub. Morning was spent on the upper beat by the Orchard pool. Not a sausage. So afternoon was spent on the lower stretch. At 2pm a chinook helicopter flew low overhead following the river upstream. At 3pm an otter, bold as brass, swam nonchalantly past. At 4pm something nibbled at my spam, and that, as they say, was that.

Beautiful day, albeit too sunny for fishing, water was a good level but could not find the grayling despite trying my best for 4 hours with a variety of combinations and sizes. I suspect that I should have concentrated on the pools more and the inviting glides less and just gone deeper. Still nice to be out!

River rose a lot Sunday evening and fly fishing for pike was pretty hopeless. Gave up after a couple of hours.

Tough day but enjoyable in lovely surroundings.the fish would not respond to float tactics so opted to ledger and had a bit of joy but compared to other beats not as prolific.
