Very poor session, not a fish caught and not a sighting of any fish even though I moved around the reservoir.

Good days fishing, weather ruined the mornings fishing but few fish rising late in the evening. 1 wild brown caught on small klinkhammer, few others hooked but not landed. Nice beat but access little tricky in spots with high banks.

I was looking forward to a good days sport at Skenfrith, however a one hour downpour coloured the river and made life difficult. There were some olives hatching and some mayflies, but the fish didn't seem particularly interested, with just the odd rise, generally tucked against the bank. I managed to persuade two to take my yellow mayfly, one an absolutely beautiful 15" fish, the other and equally attractive 11". Hard work but a good day eventually. I think this is a very nice beat and with favourable water will be great to fish. My sympathy to the other angler who was on the beat and broke his rod! At least he caught some too!

Fished from 3:30 - 8:45. Steady hatches of all shapes/sizes of fly including different mayflies. However not a lot rising, for most of the session. Difficult swirling winds didn't help presentation. Tried nymphs to start but no joy. Located a few small fish around 6pm and landed one (12oz) but missed a few takes. Over the rest of evening worked through beat and missed a couple of takes on a hackled mini m. Brown. Tried several other patterns but that seemed to work best. Around 8:30 downstream of the bridge came alive and I hooked a much better fish which shed the hook after a few seconds. Unfortunately had to leave then as I had to be somewhere else. This was unfortunate as the river was starting to come alive and I am sure that would have been the killing time.

4lb Chub on an Ally Shrimp in Dog Hole. Some early morning salmon rises in the Vanstone and one good take on a black shrimp double (12). River went dead after heavy rain and wash off from the fields quickly coloured the water.
Mick was very useful in helping me with understanding the beat on my first time here.

Started at 3.30 pm. Sunny but stiff breeze. Overnight rain had coloured the water. The river is in a very deep wooded chasm, 6' deep to water surface. Lots of bankside trees and in the river LWD.
Fished gh-ptn in gaps, got first WBT, about 9" at start.
Around 4 pm some mayfly came off and a few fish started rising so swapped to dry and tried to get to them. Climb down bank, try and wade upstream and a cast at the fish.
Out of 8 attempts, lots of lost flies, deep, deep wading and improvised presentation, 4' leader, got 9" WBT on mayfly emerger. Climb out find a fish and try again. Lost several after contact on snags or ?? finish at 6pm when rise stopped.
Both fish really put a bend in the 6' no3 rod, such power for small fish.

A terrible start to the day with extremely heavy rain and sleet which caused the local streams to flood chocolate coloured water into the main river. This is late May! I'm very much a novice to salmon fishing and used a single hand rod and a sinking #9 line. An Allies shrimp turned a fish over early in my session 200yds up stream from the bridge but I spent quite some time trying to find the end of the beat, possibly walking a fair distance up-stream before walking back to the fist river access point. I did have one ferocious take which bent the rod double for at least three seconds before the fish threw the hook, cheap flies? Only one knock followed and colored water closed the day, however; I will be back. Thank you WUF.

Heavy rain first thing and a blustery cool day. Foul weather for late May. It brightened up later but river soon coloured up. Very little in the way of fish activity on the surface. A great little river but nil return on the day.

A couple of hours between 3 and 5: the river was slightly coloured but the weather, blue skies and cloud was promising. A few mayflies were coming off, not as many as yesterday but enough to interest the fish. Four trout to 12 inches on Mayfly and mayfly nymph.
