I located the fastest section of flow I could find on beat 4 and with the aid of a dog spike and rope gained access to fish it. After two hours without a bite I opted to wade across the shallows to the deep run opposite and using luncheon meat instead of pellets I immediately caught a chub. At last, the essence of Wye fishing, wading the river close up and personal to the quarry using balanced tackle. Some four hours of excellent sport completely justified the cost and effort of driving from London. Four hard fighting chub, lost fish and missed bites all components of a memorable session. I then returned to trying to tempt the barbel in a section of deep water for four hours without reward.
Next trip I will take more care to investigate river conditions to optimize the possibility of catching barbel but the chub are a pretty good consolation.

A most frustrating day. Plenty of fish rising but not to anything I could offer, and I offered pretty much everything over the space of 4-5 hours. Still, always a pleasure to fish this lovely stretch of water. Will be back.

Drizzly day with light wind. Fished for a couple of hours right bank, past the headland, from the boat house. Tried several varieties of wets with several takes and one landed from the edge of Lillies. I love the remoteness of the place. Should be a bit fitter than me, though! Can see an angler fishing the opposite bank on Youtube!

Gosh the river is low! Down to 2 -3 metre wide gutters in places. Fishing typically Irfon - challenging but productive. All fish on dries - grayling of 2 year classes, lovely plump 14 inch fish x 3 and skinnier 9-10 inch fish x 4. One of the latter had significant beak scarring. Brownies brought to hand nothing bigger than 9" but the best fish of the day - a 15 - 16" brownie didn't come to hand after being played for 3 mins so can't count him! Close encounter of the otter kind - a family threesome swam past under the rod tip of one rod - and also avian predators plentiful.

River conditions low and morning bright sunshine. Baited various swims close to our bank with hemp and pellet and moved around without locating any fish. Fished late afternoon until dark with feeders in the deepest water we could find but did not have a bite all day. There were at least 6 anglers on the opposite bank and we only saw 1 barbel caught and one lost.

A great day trotting a large thick speci waggler with carp pellets and meat cubes. 20 chub from 2 to 4lb caught wading in just above the white water at the bottom of the beat. Fish came steadily throughout the day but fed more aggressively when there was cloud cover. Plenty of smaller chub and Dace graced the net and then at last knocking whiskers put in an appearance to end a terrific day. Approximately 7lb of hard fighting perfectly conditioned Wye Barbel.
