Fishing:Trout (River)

Difficult downstream breeze made presentation of dries and nymphs difficult. Plenty of different fly hatching including a few mayflies. Lots of missed takes without connecting. Also fish shedding hook quickly. I fished from mid day to 8:30pm. However, between 3 and 7 was dead with no movement. Not a lot rising but fish would come up to dry but were suspicious. All fish to hand were smallish the best perhaps 10oz. Lost one much better fish on a nymph. Still on the learning curve!

Beat:Lower Longtown

Fishing:Trout (River)

A late afternoon session on this favourite beat produced 9 fish fairly rapidly, then all action ceased and despite the amazing amount of fly life on the river, the fish were nowhere to be found. Having decided to call it a day and head off for the Crown inn for some good beer and a fine evening meal, surprisingly caught one more trout on the last cast. Still a favourite beat!

Water running away a bit now but this beat has produced for me at this height before. Tried all the likely spots for this amount of water but could only find shad and trout.

This was my first time on the Usk. The weather was overcast when I arrived, the river looked in fine form but no fish were showing. I caught quite quickly on a gold head but quickly changed to a dry fly as by mid morning fish were taking flies off the surface. The fly life was spectacular at times with many different flies coming off including Mayflies. By lunch time the sun was shining, it was very bright and the fish stopped showing on the surface but I persisted with a Mayfly imitation as Mayflies were coming off in increasing numbers. I caught no more fish despite my best efforts but this was due to my inexperience rather then the beat as it obviously has plenty of trout as they were taking flies all over when I left...just not mine!
Will be back for another go before too long.
