The river was low and clear, with little fly come off the water. Saw a few small fish in the deeper holes, but pretty quiet. A great place to pass a few hours.

Caught one good size trout of approximately 12 inches on a size 16 brown goldhead nymph. The river was very low and clear and not much was hatching.

2x ledgered worm, 4 on spinner. Info...the res was stocked today at 13.00 so there's more to catch lads.

Another grand day on the Edw - quite cool but many sunny periods, and enough flies hatching to make the trout look up. Eventually landed 16, between 5" and 10", on either paras or dries (adams, dark olives etc.). I think I could have tempted some of the larger trout on nymphs, but was enjoying the top of the water sport. Lots of active birds as well, including 2 Kingfishers flashing past for a few minutes.

Caught 2 trout, one of 16" on dry CDC olive. Fly presentation was difficult against a blustery wind.
This is a lovely beat with bank access improvements recently undertaken. The fish were rising all day in much of the deeper water. Thank you for a great day.

2 barbel, 8lbs and 6lbs 2ozs, caught on swimfeeder and pellets.

2 Barbel

Never seen the river so low, so looked like it might be a tough day. Trying to show a non angler how to trot with a pin was the plan. The only swim that looked possible, with enough water to fish, was the bottom pool. We trotted it by wading out from the crib above. Feeding maggot, hemp and corn with maggot on the hook. Hooked lots of small chub, dace and 4 barbel, losing just one. Even I found it a bit difficult in the turbulent fast run with lots of small stuff attacking the bait. Changed to a very lightly fished small cube of meat and had a barbel first cast. For the last hour or so sat right on the end peg. One of us on heavier rig and big bait which did not get a touch, the other on maggot feeder and at times on small meat cubes. Got lots and lots of bites and had another couple of barbel. We only fished from 2.30 till 7.30 and on light gear, so even though the barbel were very small, none above about two and half pounds, it was good sport. The chub were all pretty small again nothing above two. A good day, great scenery, plenty of bites and plenty of fish for a novice angler to see.

5 Barbel, 20 Other

After struggling on a club water for two chub the day before, we were not expecting to fill our boots at Wyastone. GP started the day at the Rocks and managed a Barbel after two hours. I fished below the wires and went through my repertoire of baits (types and sizes), hook length materials and hook sizes. All to no avail. We found hooks, bait and leads /feeders covered in slimy green blanket weed every cast. We later moved to swims nearer the steps but the scorers were not troubled further. I finished the day bite less, no sign even of a chub.
Stunning scenery but we could have enjoyed that free of charge as the dog walkers do.

1 Barbel

The river was very low with almost no flow at all. This made it difficult to spot areas of possible barbel presence. Fished pellets in the deep water at Loxters pool for six hours to no avail. Investigated beat 2 right bank for the following day. The adjoining A438 made this stretch quite noisy, not the Wye experience I was seeking. Moved on to check out beats 3 and 4 left bank. More secluded with better river access and more parking than previous beats so resolved to fish there the next day.

Very low river conditions and bright sunshine made for a difficult day. Baited various spots and moved around the beat trying to locate fish. Ended up fishing the deepest spots we could find with feeders and at about 5pm managed a 6lb barbel followed by a smaller barbel and about a 3lb chub just before dusk. Nice beat but tough conditions made for a slow day.
