First time on this beat but managed to cover most of the catches with fly as indicated on a very detailed beat description.
Some salmon were appparently showing in the Rectory Pool but none seen by me. Looking forward to next visits later in month, weather permitting.

Amazing day. AH caught two salmon on Usk Grub Fly. 9lb and 11.5lbs.
Stuart Reid caught 9lber on same fly and a 14lb fish on Blue Devon minnow.
The two smaller fish slightly coloured and the two bigger ones fairly fresh. Plenty of fish seen.

Fished 15.00 until dusk. River looked to be more than a foot lower than last week and very clear. Started below the island at the downstream end where I tempted a small brown on olive dry. Then switched to small black nymph and caught another. Worked the nymph across and upstream without result. Fishing started to rise at 20.00 when I took three more.
A glorious day and the perfect end to our holiday.

Water looked good and and 3 fish seen running through beat @ c. 8am. Fished hard but clearly not very competently.
Mid afternoon break for trout in afternoon was upstream nymphing fun. An enjoyable day as ever.

Pouring rain for much of the day. Limited fly activity. There was a spell for 30 mins around 11am at the top end of the beat when the fish were rising to a Klinkhammer and I should have taken 5 fish of variable sizes. Ended up with 1 around 10 inches which was returned. Very quiet for the remainder of the day and took another fish about 10 inches on a gold head which was also returned.

It was a bit of a trek to get to the start of the beat but once in the water wading was comfortable in chest waders even with extra flow from the recent rain. I only left the water once to get past a fallen tree.
I landed 7 fish (and missed a few) including 2 approaching the pound mark, all took a beige klinkhammer.

Got to the river at about 2pm for an afternoon and evening session. Found the Arrow quite low and clear with plenty of mayfly coming off and the trout rising to them on just about every pool. Expecting a red letter day I tied on a mayfly pattern but unfortunately for some reason (probably my poor skills!!) I failed to connect to a single fish!! Some of the larger trout were even leaping out the water to catch the naturals in mid air but still I missed every take!! I had to check my fly at one point to make sure it was still tied to a hook!! Tried a few other dries but they were locked onto the mayfly. Gave up in the end for fear of going home bald through pulling out my hair in frustration!!
Another cracking bit of river and a better angler would of had a great few hours. Who ever said fishing when the mayfly are on was too easy?!!

Evening conditions looked good at 1ft 4in, but nothing seen or contacted. One small shad and a couple of brownies caught. One thing of interest: a lot of big, silver scales on the bank of the Heirag, which I assume were the result of an otter encounter with the elusive Mr Salmon.
WUF Note: The big scales would have probably been those of a shad, which gather in the Heirag in considerable numbers in June.
