A difficult day with all fish caught in the morning. It became very hot and bright in the afternoon and the fish went off the feed by 11am. The barbel came from the faster water in the woods with the largest at 7lb. I was also dissappointed to lose a couple of very large fish due to snags. A couple of chub around 3lb plus eels made up the total. I suspect some rain would improve conditions.

Quite bright, low water (as far as I went) but some nice stretches. No sign of even a petit poisson but my eyesight may be failing me.

Challenging conditions. Weather lovely but lost a lot of tackle as continually snagging and had to resort to single baits instead of pellet feeder. We tried a number of swims and similar challenges. Single luncheon meat snagged less but brought eels and a chub. Late afternoon bailiff advised on the Crib swim being less snaggy and it was here I caught 6.9lbs and 7lbs barbel. Some youngsters came to swim in the swim next to me! Politely asked them not to and they apologised and went away! Lovely day, lovely place, friendly bailiff and 2 Barbel!

Back on Holme Lacey for a second day. Weather glorious again but most of the colour from yesterday had dropped out. Again we kept mobile and fished numerous swims along the whole length, BH catching 5 barbel and 11 chub and BG had 6 barbel and 15 chub again. All caught on various pellets and boillies to round off two great days fishing making the 560 mile round trip again well worth it. Finally once again a massive thank you to the Wye and Usk Foundation for providing the opportunity to fish this fabulous river.

J wanted to learn some methods and rigs for taking fish from deep fast flowing channels which would not produce fish normally. A skill set that would come in useful if fishing in New Zealand /USA etc. 2 trout to 3/4lbs and 2 more to the river all returned.

1st July
Lovely stretch but we were disappointed. The upstream section has the best water on the far bank with pools and croys but no swims cleared on the side that WUF have so you can't cast across! Dowstream section again has good water on the far side but it was rammed with anglers maybe 7 or 8 guys over a 200 yard stretch.
Only decent spot was the one croy on WUF side where dense vegitation prevented anyone fishing opposite. Caught 2 barbel both on corn using timebomb filled with corn and 4mm pellets. Good access.

Fished this beat for the first time. The directions to the site and the description of 2/3 mile stretch of left bank River Irfon fishing were absolutely spot on, so many thanks to WUF and the local farmer for agreeing to open up this special bit of river. At the bottom, there is a large pool which looks extremely inviting, and a small feeder pool was literally teeming with fish. Upon my less than subtle approach, some of them actually scrabbled over litte rocks in the pool, such was their desire to escape as a towering shadow enveloped them, and such was their number! Unfortunately, although several fish were rising most of the day, I only managed to persuade one fish to take a pull at a hare's ear, and it didn't stick. But the fish are there and when I have more experience of fly fishing I'm sure I would catch here. The most secluded beat, with easy access, I've ever fished. Thanks again to WUF and the farmer!

The fishing was tough due to low water and the conditions were bright. Had a couple of fish on the nymph and a couple on dries.
