Beat:On fishing the Lugg & Arrow

Fishing:All Species (in season)

The Leen 25th October 2009: 15 Grayling to 40cm. A very pleasant stretch of river to fish and, although I had to contend with some strong gusts of wind, there were some good sheltered reaches. The grayling were active and responded well to a Copper Beaded PTN.

Mortimers Cross 26th October 2009: 3 Grayling, 2 Brown Trout. It took time to locate fish on this long beat but one deep pot in a meander surrendered two beautiful specimen grayling. Decided not to linger into the gloaming, having read that the vanquished Lancastrian army was mercilessly put to the sword by the river in 1461!

Beat:Lower Carrots and Luggsmouth

Fishing:All Species (in season)

A fantastic day which included my first ever Barbel. Three fish in total and I am now completely hooked on Barbel fishing! Stunning looking and hard fighting fish. All fell to pellet and feeder tactics. Looking forward to returning very soon.

Beat:Middle Wye Coarse Fishing

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Sorry for the delay but just to let you know over the 2 days, 24th & 25th October 2009, we caught 9 [nine] barbel with the largest 10lb 7oz with another at 9lb 4oz. Great looking healthy fish that fought like demons, brilliant, All but the biggest 2 on 8 mill halibuts the other 2 on the new sbs bait from Des Taylor significant? My only qualm is that there are not many fishable swims over the whole length. We caught our fish from the vanstone pool and looking at the swim, most people fish there. But over all a memorable weekend many thanks.

Beat:Middle Ballingham & Fownhope No.8

Fishing:All Species (in season)

The scenery and wildlife makes it a nice place to be and once settled in a swim an enjoyable day can be had. Between the two of us over the two days we caught a couple of chub and a few barbel with the barbel averaging 6lb, all falling to ledger tactics. I would say that an injection of mountain goat blood would be advisable for fellow anglers as the banks are step and care is needed when making your way down to the waters edge.

Thanks again to the Wye and Usk foundation.

Beat:Mortimers Cross (River Lugg)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

First impression not very good. River by the parking looks not tempting but further down is much better, especially woodland parts. The bit without trees seem to be fishless but I'm sure there are some nice trout hiding(see you springtime chaps). I fished upstream nymph and got a few grayling; one of them aroung 50 centimeters but didn't manage to land it.
Plenty of grayling and trout fingerlings. My friend fished czech nymph with much, much more success. 9 over 40 cm fish from one place! He got 20+ decent grayling. I would advise to start from the bottom of the beat and go upstream, otherwise the mud you rise does not help the fishing.

Beat:Mortimers Cross (River Lugg)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

River quite low despite rain. Only very small grayling and trout rising and caught. I have yet to understand this stretch. Went once last year. No sign of any sizable rising fish. You feel a bit conspicuous with the lack of bankside trees on a lot of the river. Any advice would be welcome. I usually fish with a floater which has worked very well this year on the upper Wye. I persevered with sunken nymph yesterday but only caught very small fish.

Beat:Lyepole (River Lugg)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Lyepole is a beat which never seems to disappoint. Although the records show that it is fished quite heavily, the fish still seem to respond provided you are prepared to go deep and fish a heavy nymph through the pools. Otherwise, everything about the place is just about perfect: there is no village here, but a steep-sided valley between wooded hills where few people seem to come, two farms and a riverside cottage, buzzards calling overhead.even the parking is ideal. You leave your car by an old stone bridge, halfway along the one mile beat, so you can chose to go up or down. The car is thus strategically placed for lunch or a meeting of friends who have split the beat between themselves. There are fish under the bridge, of course, and in most of the pools.

Working with Czech nymphs, I got 8 grayling to 14 inches and 5 out of season trout to 13 inches. The East European nymphing style is not my absolutely favourite fishing method, but there is still something charming about leading those tumbling weighted flies down under the rod top, making the mandatory strike at the end of the sweep and feeling a big silver grayling kicking away down there in the depths of the pool. The whole process has an air of magic about it, as unlikely and surprising as producing a rabbit out of a hat with a flourish.

Beat:Holme Lacy & Lechmere's Ley (River Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

The river had risen 6 inches in the past few days and was only slightly coloured. I caught 3 barbel (largest 6lb) and 7 chub (largest 5.5lb) on pellet, meat & sweetcorn bait using legered feeder tactics.

Fishing with my brothers Mike and Chris, we had a combined catch of 12 barbel, more than 20 chub and a large pike which latched onto a small chub that was being landed. The scenery was wonderful, the weather was balmy and
we had a great day fishing. What more can you ask!?
