Area:Usk

Beat:Glan-yr-Afon

Fishing:Trout (River)

Each fisher caught two small brown trout (6-8 inches) and all fish were successfully released. The weather was showery rain and the river rose and coloured for a while before falling slightly at the end of the afternoon. Some sedge were seen, but there was no organised hatch of fly. Accordingly, very few fish moved. Wet and dry fly were used but the catches were on small wet flies of traditional patterns such as Greenwells and Black Spider. Difficult day but we enjoyed the varying fishing the beat offers.

Great to explore a new beat at summer levels and understand the lies for another day. Lovely fly water. Can't wait to return with 2' on the Llanstephan gauge!

Raining quite heavily on arrival but stopped shortly afterwards. I decided to walk the length of the beat for a "recce". With some knowledge of the beat I chose to fish the downstream end, past the shallow slack water into the deeper faster flow. This proved to be a good choice as I caught five barbel, 1 just over 10 lbs, 1 - 9 lbs, 2 - 8 lbs and 1 about 4 lbs, 5 chub to 5 lbs and 2 eels. What a day! Thank you Don for our interesting chat and a well managed beat. Another wonderful day on the Wye. Thank you W.U.F.

No barbel. First time on the Wye. So much to learn. Very enjoyable though.

Despite getting soaked - twice - a very productive day! The work on the swims is excellent, so thanks to the landowner - who has also removed the big snag that used to hamper landing fish on the bottom swim on the near bank. Fished 3 swims - 2 on the far bank (the very bottom and just up from the large tree) and the bottom swim on the near bank - and had barbel & chub from them all. Fish were all caught on 2 x 8ml or 10ml elipse pellets with either micro pellets in a closed end feeder or groundbait & pellets in a cage feeder. Also big thanks to the local who gave me the tip on where to fish the swim above the tree (45 degrees downstream, towards the tree stump and 2/3rds out). One thing to be aware of is that the juvenile ducks will take your bait later in the day. I managed to hook one on small pellets, but was thankfully able to get him in, wrap him in a towel and remove the hook - hopefully he will have learnt, but be wary of them. Barbel were from 4.5lb to 8.5lb, including one fish with a lot of predator damage, and chub from 3lb to just under 6lb. A VERY good day on a much improved beat.

A superb day in beautiful secluded surroundings. The river was relatively low. All the fish came from the faster water near to the parking area. We caught steadily throughout the day. All fish fell to pellet and groundbait feeder. First time on the Wye. Definitely coming back!

River very low, only 3 nice chub for me, but PC banked a pristine 9lbs barbel, otherwise very difficult. Guy salmon fishing from boat with outboard engine was bit of a pain.

WUF note - The salmon angler was not on a WUF ticket.
