Beat:Lower Grywne Fawr

Fishing:Trout (River)

2 small wild brown trout both under 6 inches long to a weighted ptn. River was clear and in good condition. There is a dead sheep in the water at the start of the beat. Very few rising fish and only a minimum of insect life. Superb setting for an afternoon and evening of fishing and watching the buzzerds and dippers. There is a red kite but I didn't see it.

There was no salmon caught just one pluck in the upper beat on a Cascade but it might have been a larger trout (five other trout landed all returned). Very nice beat but difficult acces in a large SUV. The Foundation provided all necessary details and your services, most important the fact that even from abroad such a nice beat can be reservated at little cost are to be recommended. Two little points, I like the beat to be controlled as it is the case in most countries. The second point, at 9pm on the opposite site of the river, not replying any greeting, a local boy with cowboy hat, spinning gear and net at hand was screening the bank of rhe river and was clearly annoyed we were still there. This sad fact is also universal on all but the best controlled beats .

First time on this beat. I can't say I was impressed as the access to swims was very poor. If the ground was wet it would have been necessary to drop in on sky hooks! There were two which you could access but the levels were quite low and there was a great deal of weed which ended up with tackle losses and only a few fish. 1 Barbel, 1 Chub and strangely 1 eel on a huge lump of luncheon meat.

I fished morning through to mid afternoon for trout and grayling. A lovely stretch although a little daunting because of the size and number of pools. I caught a couple of grayling Czech nymphing on the upper rock pool and ended up on the main bend down by the Rectory just as the evening rise kicked off. If I had stayed, I am convinced I could have had a couple of the large browns I saw jump.

Travelled from Suffolk but even with a very early start wasn't fishing until 9am.
4 - nil to the barbel by 11am, then two were landed at around the 4lbs mark. A move to the Wharfe pool resulted in a two hour blank, and a move back to the last swim and a switch to luncheon meat immediately resulted in a number of "unhitable" bites, smaller hook and smaller Meat revealed the culprit to be an Eel, duly landed at about 1lbs. Back on the Halibut pellet resulted in the best fish of the day a Barbel, not 10lbs but certainly 9lbs+ and lost another that felt bigger. A further move back by the car park for the evening session proved to be a disappointment with no fish caught.
All in all a great day out on a fabulous stretch of water. However be aware that most of the swims are extremely snaggy and you can expect to loose a LOT of gear (and fish).
