18lbs coloured hen caught on spinner, another fish lost and one seen leaping. River at 1'4", 17C with some colour. Midday session with small rod produced a couple of WBT up to 10" on nymphs. Lovely day, thank you.

Arrived at 6.45am (early start from Wiltshire) River 0.78m nice tint falling slowly. Fished for 7hrs without sign of salmon spinning and fly. Then had (another) impromptu lesson from Tom Hannon, during which a fish showed toward the end of Rock pool. Single spey markedly improved, an hour later a red cock fish of 8lb accepted my Golden Killer (Russian pattern) off the tip of Rock. Kindly netted by Tom and safely returned. My first fly caught Usk salmon. A lovely day (suntan included!).

Stunning place; water low and clear. I started at the bottom of the beat and caught a small grayling and 2 small trout on a para adams. Fishing klink n dink in a deep run below some boulders I caught 2 trout of about 0.5kg both taking the klinkhamer and a large grayling of around 0.75kg on a #16 beadhead PTN. A grayling of similar size followed, from a similar run. I switched to dead drifting nymphs (olive and natural GRHE) to fish a deep channel below a run and was rewarded with a grayling of more than 1kg - easily the biggest I've caught. I'll definitely be going back!

Fished in the afternoon and evening. The river was very coloured and the level appeared to be gradually falling. Surface fish activity, as before this summer, came to life very noticeably around 8pm, despite very significant fly activity also occurring throughout the afternoon. I had the impression that fading light was the stimulus.
I had one fish of about half a pound, and hooked, but did not land, a couple of somewhat larger trout.

The river was just about right for the fly when I arrived at 10.30am. Clear and a reasonable height and I did get a pull as well as knocks from the odd brownie.
Unfortunately there must have been a heavy shower further up the valley and by 2pm there was a lot of silt from somewhere (farm run-off?) that must have reduced the chance of getting a salmon - the friendly trout fisherman who I was sharing the beat with was just as frustrated.
Hopefully the efforts by the Foundation in reducing this annoying feature of the Wye will eventually pay off.

Sunny day with patchy high cloud, river at good height following rain earlier in the week but with colour hiding the streamer weed. Chub caught on sweetcorn, switched to pellet and had a barbel at the end. Didnt fish all day. Great to meet Tony the ghillie, a lovely man with lots of useful info.
