Fishing:Winter Grayling

7 grayling 10 - 16" on upstream nymph. All but one fish came to a tungsten beaded hares ear. Levels were low and water clear. Most fish came from fast riffles rather than the deeper pools.

2 x grayling 16 and 18 inches, Pink Shrimp. Another mild day by recent standards. The Lugg was a nice colour, but still very high and fast. Apart from a few parr, I had a real struggle through most of the day trying to work out where the grayling had wandered off to. However, I was lucky enough to bump into a brace of good ones before dark.

Area:Garren

Beat:The Garren

Fishing:Winter Grayling

Half a dozen tiny Grayling all caught in one spot between the A40 bridge and the weir. It's a tricky beat to nymph with snags aplenty above and below water. The weir offers some respite to this frustration but I didn't locate a thing there, interesting that it has previously been reported as teeming with Chub. I suppose they must have returned to the main river - I'd love to know what tempted them up there in November. Gave it my best above the weir but blanked there too - something faintly depressing about wading in silt! Perhaps the Garren might be a more rewarding small stream experience on a dry fly in the spring but I left feeling a little disappointed, largely due to my own failings (as usual) but also perhaps that for a stretch of stream with such obvious drawbacks it compares unfavourably with other roving voucher beats priced at 4 tokens.

We did not catch a thing. With regards to the fishing venue it was the first time I had been there and I have to say that I was very disappointed that most of the places you could fish on the were unfishable, the sides were so steep with little or no room at the bottom of the slope, there was only 1 place on the whole stretch that was actually fishable and had a flat section at the bottom of the slope (which is where we fished). When selecting a stretch of the Wye to fish we just went by the information on your website, however there was no mention at all of the steep slopes and limited fishing spots on your website. I would not fish at the Courtfield stretch again.

32 x grayling 10-18 inches between 2 rods - a combination of trotting and bugging, sometimes shoulder to shoulder. At last a long-awited spring-like day at 8 degrees, lambs gambolling in the field and woodpeckers hammering. I even saw a large dark olive taken at the surface. We had some super fish: five at 17 inches and one at 18 inches.
