A warm start to the day gave way to the usual lunchtime downstream (Northerly) wind but the steady rain forecast did not materialise. There were fish smutting when we arrived, mainly small fish, and later hatches of olives. However, fish did not feed steadily except for one ten-minute spell when activity noticeably increased. This was at about 2.30 pm after I had started to think there would be no meaningful response from the trout today, but thereafter duns mainly sailed past untaken.
I caught on a dark - too dark - olive parachute, fish of approx 6 and 14 oz, but was also refused with this pattern in the busier period, and one of around 11 oz on conventional Greenwell's. No good on nymphs and shrimps, as experience has taught, but their time will come.
It was good to see oystercatchers and sandpipers on this long-awaited first trip of 2013 to the Usk, less good to watch goosander jetting past overhead. At this rate my intended camping break in the valley in early May is going to feel more like an Easter trip!

Very enjoyable day fishing the full length of the beat in the company of Colin Richardson. Conditions were excellent although only one salmon showed itself.
A blank was saved by a beautifully conditioned pike of 15 pounds which took a Flying C at last knockings, in the bay in front of the fishing hut.

Lovely beat fished by two of us, spent most of the day on the fly and focussed on Maddox, Corner Tree and Vanstone. Hooked into a a very good fish (est. between 20-30lbs) on a 2 1/2" black and yellow tube fished deep at the bottom of Vanstone, unfortunately lost it having played the fish for 10 mins. Hooked into another fish late in the day in the middle of the glide into the Vanstone on a pbp but also lost. All in all a great day on a well kept beat - we will be back!

Thank you for arranging the fishing at Fenni Fach on Saturday. A glorious spring day with a respectable hatch of olives through the middle of the day. Three lovely trout caught and safely released - a 16 incher and two 14s.

Weather conditions were good, river was good - perhaps just a little high. We fished unsuccessfully with Nymphs whilst waiting for the hatch to start. This started at about 1:00pm and finish at 1:15pm, in that brief interlude we saw half a dozen fish rise one of which took my March Brown dry fly.
No idea why there was so little fly life - perhaps the frost the night before? Enjoyable beat to fish.

Fished the home waters on what was a beautiful sunny Saturday +/- an intermittant southerly wind, and with the water now warmed to 10 deg C. A moderate hatch of Grannom from 11 until 12.30 got fish rising to emerging pupae immediately the hatch began. These were mixed in with some March Browns which trickled off from time to time until mid-afternoon. Surprisingly, no LDOs were seen even into late afternoon. Took trout and OOS grayling on Grannom pupa emergers, and mid-afternoon fish on a HE emerger and March Brown Duck's Dun. With the oystercatchers, sandpipers and martins active on the river, it actually felt as if spring may at last be sprung? Fingers crossed.
