Another lovely beat, albeit fairly short in distance. We found 2 swims on the left hand bank where the faster water merged into back eddys which looked ideal. A 2lb chub followed by a 1lb plus eel was caught by J A early on using meat as bait, but as it turned out that was it for the day. A L managed a 6lb 12oz Barbel, and two 3lb plus chub afer lunch on single elipse and halibut pellet, but an enjoyable day nonetheless.

Arrived at 6.30pm to an unexpected mayfly hatch and, of course, with no mayfly immitations! Luckily there were also plenty of sedge and olives of various descriptions although not many fish rising. The water level was up a bit, with some colour to it.
Ended at around 9.30pm with several wild browns, three of which were over 1lb giving a terrific fight on a 3-weight. All were taken on a flash-back nymph fished NZ style, mostly from the faster water.

Several very small trout, salmon parr and one dace - all on nymphs or a light Cahill dry.
For future reference, please can you tell me whether there is access to the right bank downstream from the church. I couldn't find any way that didn't involve going through someone's garden and I wasn't keen on wading across as the river was fairly high.

WUF note - This section is generally fished from the left bank.

No fish caught or seen. River had a tinge of colour when we arrived and we fished to lunch time without any success. Went back to the water after lunch and the river had risen 6" and was the colour of chocolate. We gave it to 3.30pm and went back to it to see if it had cleared any, but it was even darker and higher so we gave up.

Beat:How Caple Court

Fishing:Coarse

No. of Anglers:1

We had a very good day fishing at How Caple Court and between the 2 of us we managed to catch 21 Barbel upto 8lbs 4oz and 17 Chub but only upto 3lbs 8oz. Most of the fish were caught by trotting lunchon meat, we also ledgered using halibut pellets. All the fish seemed in very good health but we noticed that 3 of the Barbel had the lower tails missing. Between 06.45am - 09.00am 5 Cormorants were seen flying up stream.

Started well. Two trout 10", 12" and a 14" grayling, also a good trout lost, all within the first hour or so on a CDC Dun. Missed a couple of takes in the second half of the morning, then nothing for the rest of the day.

12 barbel and 1 chub. Feeder fished sweetcorn mid river, bridge swim nice fishery. Needs working parties for opening up more swims, only 2 swims near car park area then a long walk to anything approaching a swim. Recommend visit to the gym before fishing if unable to drive down to river. Bailiff called it cardiac hill . Second access point not marked and seriously steep down to river.
