Fishing:Salmon

Fine 17lb hen fish - some colour but deep and firm. Returned, of course. Took a size 10 Ally's shrimp. Caught at 3.30pm today. Water 0.90 at Chainbridge this morning and falling - perfect. Not a WUF beat (too scruffy I'm afraid!) but thought you'd like to know.
WUF Note : Aberbaiden has since joined the Passport scheme in June 2016 and is available for day ticket bookings. Improvements to access is also planned.

River running high and clearing after the weekend.
Terry elected to trot and caught 5 grayling up to around the pound mark and 4 o/s brown trout. Fred ledgered a swimfeeder all day had numerous dace and small chub up to a pound or so plus 7 o/s brown trout. It was a fish every cast for Fred. (After a terrible weekend's fishing, with only one fish caught, a Barbel of 10lb 12oz to Fred at the Warren (opposite Sheephouse)) It was a relief to finally get amongst some fish. Thanks for the suggestion from Allyson & Wendy that we try the lower Llangoed stretch. Worked a treat, must fish this stretch again when the water is lower so the we can wade as well. Just a note for WUF although the water was below the red line, a canoeist decided it was o.k. for him to come down through the area we were fishing!!! He was polite and stayed the far side of the river and passed by reasonably quickly and quitely.
WUF Note: We apologise for this unacceptable breach of the canoeing arrangements by people who should know better.

Had a wonderful day on the beat with my son, weather was fine and the river was in good order, running almost clear and about 8 inches above the bases of the central arches. All the makings of a fine day out. Unfortunately no fish caught but my spey casting improved immeasurably. Well that's it for the year, many thanks to WUF for all the hard work they have done, much appreciated. Be back next year.

Beautiful autumn day. The river was clearing and falling, so the conditions looked auspicious. 2lb and 2.5lb wild browns caught on a small stoat's tail, but no sign of the larger cousins until virtually the last cast of the day. Then a 15lb hen salmon caught again on a small stoat's tail. As the salmon was landed two otters started playing in the pool in front of us. Hard to imagine a better end to the day.
Quick word about Glanusk. Very warm welcome from the estate office and useful advice on flies and which pools to concentrate efforts on. The banks and access are in excellent condition and the river there is swarming with dippers which is always a good sign. Cannot recommend more highly.

River 2ft 2" and 5ft visibility; near perfect. Fished the morning and had a cock salmon of 19lbs on a #6 Bann shrimp from the top of Rock pool which now resides in Abercynrig hatchery. Fish showing in all pools fished and had another offer in the Gravel catch.
In evening the other rod had 2 more salmon from the Rock pool.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

Two small grayling caught on PTN. The river was quite high and rising during my visit. I covered most of the beat and never saw a single fish move on or near the surface. My hopes were raised for a moment when I heard several loud splashes under an oak tree. At first I though it was a big fish noisily taking something off the surface, but it turned out to be a clumsy sqirrel dropping acorns into the river. I found this a difficult day, but I'll be back.

There had been heavy overnight rain so the river was both rising and colouring up. Did not see a fish rise all day. Fished Czech nymph style and took half a dozen out of season trout and half a dozen grayling. Best fish was the first one - a grayling of a pound and a half or so but the others were all on the small side. Pink bugs proved the best patterns. Despite the awful weather (it continued to rain for most of the day) it was still a joy to be back on the Irfon. There cannot be many places that can match the beauty of this valley.
