The last time I fished the Olchon the line was freezing in the rings and I managed to snap my rod at the butt prompting a bankside repair involving a Swiss army knife, superglue and some backing from my reel. It was a bit warmer this time but I still struggled. It seemed the fish could see you coming before you'd even spotted the pool they lived in! I'd managed 3 trout by the time I reached the top of the beat at lunchtime.

I fished on a windy and overcast afternoon simply to peruse the beat - something I've been meaning to do for a while now. What a lovely little stretch for few hours fishing. Pool after pool after pool full of chunky little trout, 9 of which made it to my net and at least as many fell off! As well as the trout I also got myself a nice new no2 Mepps and a long length of line. There were some flattened paths in the undergrowth where someone had climbed over the fence to access a few of the pools - no doubt the owner of the spinner!

3 trout caught and returned on a fairly cold evening (15 degrees) and overcast. Mayfly were hatching but the fish were preoccupied with the nymphs and largely ignoring dries and spent flies. river was slightly coloured and reading 1ft 2in at the gauge and falling.

River very clear with a few flies about but not many rises. Temperature was several degrees lower than previous days with a cold wind. Caught 4 trout up to 12in on dry fly. Only able to fish till 12.30. First time I have fished here but would like to try again sometime.

Nil. Strong downstream wind made it difficult to cast and control line. Then persistent rain added to the misery so I surrendered late morning and moved on to Hergest,Edw.

A cold wet day with a very low river. Brown algae coated the bed making for slippery wading. Few fish seen and I blanked.
Fished the following day that started with similar weather That cleared into beautiful sunshine. Caught one decent fish on nymph, again very limited surface activity. Lovely surroundings.

An enjoyable day on the dries. Could not use nymph or wets because the shad would not leave them alone! All sorts of flies on the water, olives, mayfly, sedges terrestials, never quite sure what the trout were taking at any one time.
Spent some time watching the lampreys move some quite large stones to make their nest. Nature is amazing.
