The river was dropping away and clearing after the recent rain. There was an appreciable downstream wind but because of the bend in the lower beat it was possible to get out of it to some extent. A sporadic hatch of olives from about 1 o'clock provoked some activity and I caught 3 fish of about 10" on dark spiders. Then found some rising fish in a quiet glide and caught 3 more from the surface. So, 6 altogether all returned.

Fairly disastrous afternoon all in all. I slipped getting out of the river and pulled a muscle and my sons wading boots fell to bits. No fish were actually caught but a lovely stretch of the Usk. The weather was showery and a very cold wind blew down the river. Many thanks to the girls in the office for arranging this at the last minute for us and so nice to meet you and to be able to put a face to the voice!!

5 x trout 6-8 inches. An experiment to see if they were rising yet on this little forest stream. They weren't, but the water level was, and colouring up too, on a very wet afternoon. The steam railway engine was puffing up and down the valley, adding to the general mist and fog in the trees. I got some results in the end using a little Goldbead Hare's Ear nymph.
