Well this was never going to be an easy day was it? Bright and cold, with a low river.....and little insect life.

3 trout rods ventured forth none the less. First cast in to the flats by the hut yielded a 14" trout - but little else moving. However by dint of mobile fishing 20 fish came to hand - mostly trout up to 15" but a couple of small grayling too.

But then there were two 23" fish!! One was a female grayling. If you google this you might come up with a suggestion that an alaskan grayling of this length weighs over 4lb. We have caught enough to know that this fish didnt weigh that - was quite thin - but in good condition who knows? The other 23" fish was making its presence very conspicuous in the tail of Heirag - I suspected a trout and still thought as much until it was a rods length away at which point ... a chub! Never mind, a nice fish any way.

Also spotted a couple of clonking eels in Upper Heirag but didnt fancy those on a fly. So a challenging days fishing duly rewarded.

The first time on this beat. The start was a little unnerving as it is unfishable but a quick call to Simom (Wye & Usk team) only to be reassured to persevere upstream past the caravan park where my first cast produced my first of 7 trout. None of them any size max 8" but all fiesty little brownies on light tackle, which had to be very lightly presented. All fish taken on dry flies may fly patterns and black gnat. All fish safely returned. A lovely day if a bit bright and water low. I will return to try the middle section.

Easy wading, certainly but getting in and out is not for the unfit. I think this point should be made in the Foundation description, coupled with the fact that you have to climb a wired and padlocked gate to gain access to the beat.

Lovely beat but conditions made the fish hard to come by. Low, very discoloured water and a blazing sun all day.

However, took four excellent Grayling and lost five Trout including a couple of Lunkers who knew exactly how to throw the hook.

Won't go again due to the physical characteristics of the beat. A young fit man would have no real problems.

My second day at Glanusk was as enjoyable as the first, sunny with less cloud than on Monday. I had six fish, once again all around the pound mark, taken on various nymphs and the dry sedge: the best of them a perfect trout with rosy spots on its flanks and a belly like a golden beast-plate. I took two fish home to present to the owners of the farm where I was staying. They were very much enjoyed. Glanusk is a magical place: many thanks to all concerned.
