A mild (for January) showery day on this very attractive beat. I was a bit nervous about the rain having been on a rising Irfon before, but I think the Cilmery gauge stayed around 5.3 all day. Managed eight Grayling all when Czech nymphing - 3 tiny, 3 average and 2 large, the best of which measured 16" - when I hooked it I was dreaming of much more such was the fight! All came to guess what?... Pink Shrimp... on middle dropper, until I lost the last of my regular bottom droppers on a snag and tied on a Tungsten Orange Bug which promptly attracted the last two fish - what does that prove? I honestly don't know....

Had a lovely day on this beautiful stretch of water, yet didn't get a bite. Tried various different swims from the Wood Crib all the way up to Legg Meadow which were recommended by locals and the owner Don Macey Wright (lovely chap and very knowledgeable about the environment there). Also tried a variety of different tactics for the Barbs, meat pellets paste, feeders and ledgers etc, but nothing doing at all. Even tried maggot and casters on lighter gear to see I could tempt a Chub or Dace and this didn't even produce a twitch.
The conditions looked right, quite mild after a previous cold spell, rising water with colour, but I could only fish the near side margins due to the flow.
Looks like a fantastic, well maintained stretch though and it is in a beautiful area, so I will definitely be back later in the year. Don said the Barbs started showing from March onwards.
Saw one cormorant and also another Angler from Lydbrook fishing for Pike, he didn't catch either and from speaking with Don, shouldn't have been there as I was the only person booked on the stretch…

Beat:The River Dore - Abbey Dore
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
3 x small grayling 6-9 inches, 6 x out of season trout 6-12 inches. A couple of larger grayling (maybe 12 or 13 inches) came off, as they tend to do. The larger trout had obviously spawned.

Arrived to find river about 3ft up and slightly coloured, fished some pegs half way down the beat, took a couple of chub around 2lb - 3lb and 1 barbel around 4lbs, all taken on h/pellet. Really nice to come out in such mild spring-like conditions in the middle of winter! Thanks once again Colin and all at WUF.

Beat:The Leen
Fishing:Winter Grayling

Day spent trotting for grayling on the Leen. First time we have been here - a lovely beat. The best of the water for trotting was upstream of the bridge with some nice runs and pools which held most of the fish caught today.
Total 8 grayling (largest around 1.75lb) and 5 brown trout on a windy day. It is really nice to be able to have such water available through the W&U Foundation for bait fishing for Grayling and the ease of booking made for an enjoyable day. This would be a lovely beat to have access to all year.

Beat:Monnow Valley
Fishing:Winter Grayling

Had 3 out of season trout up to about 3/4 of lb. No grayling unfortunately.
Interesting beat with a variety of water including some pretty deep pools that I don't think I was fishing very effectively.
Accessing the water still an issue in the dead of winter. Hate to think what it must be like when the bankside vegetation is high!

A bit blustery but by no means unpleasant. Alas no fish moving that I could detect and so a blank day. For the record I used a weighted nymph but no takes. Nice river with easy access. I will try again soon.
