Beat:Gromain & Upper Llanstephan

Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:1

No salmon caught or seen. Day stared really well with heavy rain and good water level but fish did not want to play the ball. Urgent matters made abandon fishery early afternoon but I'll be back soon to have some more of that tough love what is salmon fishing.

Started off the day slow, ended up with 7 barbel to 9lb on chopped down boilies and groundbait. A word of warning, if you are fishing this beat in the rain take some boots with a deep grip on them as the banks are steep and very slippery. Yours truly taking a dip up to his neck...
Also this beat is a bit tackle hungry, take plenty of feeders/leads. I would advise casting more downstream than across the river as the boulders are a nightmare and the flow just bounces your rigs into them.
A day of ups and downs but one of the nicest places I have ever fished.

What a beatiful stretch of water, for years I've driven past the upper Wye & thought one day I will fish there! 2 x grayling and 1 x trout on bugs etc, occassional rises, leaves proved to be a pain. 15lb salmon woke me up at 4.30 head & tailing through the pool at the bottom end of the beat. Can't wait to get back up there!

Our first trip to the Wye resulted in several good-sized chub in the 2-5lb bracket. No barbel unfortunately, but we'll be back.

A pleasant day's fishing in good conditions thanks to the excellent'wash-off' policy. Couple of salmon seen but none contacted. One brown trout about 1lb to salmon fly plus another similar lost. Certainly a beat with potential, we hope to visit again next season.
As always, excellent service from the office - thank you.

6 mint condition chub to 4lb 4oz and 3 barbel to 7lb 3oz in the same superb condition, noticed how quickly the barbel revived in the net before release, wonder if this is due to high oxygen levels of the water, brilliant day on this wonderful river again, had the stretch to myself, thanks WUF, keep up the good work.

Beat: R 9 Irfon

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

What a day I had! Firstly a BIG Thank You to Oliver Burch who guided/instructed me for the day. Oliver, who suggested this lovely beat on the Irfon, not only imparted some of his vast knowledge of the art of fly fishing to my willing ears but was also delightful company. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Oliver, he has the skill of a good teacher in the way that he freely but gently imparts his wealth of experience.
Thank you also to Kathryn at the Cammarch hotel for an excellent pot of coffee on arrival, most welcome after a 96 mile drive.
So...to the fishing, it was superb! I havn't been too successful with "The Lady of the stream" in the past so my brief to Oliver was to try to change this. He and the Irfon, met and surpassed all my expectations. The beat below the Hotel is delightful and the river was in tip top condition coming off the high water of earlier in the week. The days total was 9 Grayling and one BT to the net, and 2 or 3 other Grayling and a small Brownie hooked and lost. Of the 9 Graying 4 were taken on the dry fly even though rises and fly life were sparce through the day, and 5 nymphing all falling to a pink shrimp over a tungsten beaded Hares ear.(Oliver please correct me here if my description of the flies is incorrect.)
As for the size of the Grayling they ranged from 1/2 lb to a real "Boaster" of a fish of 17 inches with an estimated weight of 2 1/2 lbs plus. Considering my previous best Grayling was about a pound you can imagine my delight at the big one!
During the long drive home I re-ran the mental tape of a memorable day and will try to remember as much as possible of what Oliver taught me......I can't wait to return!
