A very slow day with very few fish moving. Weather and wind conditions were reasonable but nil fish caught. Tried all sorts of methods, all sorts of water but the best I could manage was a fish of about 1lb hooked for about 3 seconds on a weighted olive nymph hung about 18inch below the surface.
This was my first visit here and was very impressed with all aspects of it. I will return..

Fishing:Coarse

Five Barbel to 8lb and four chub to 5lb 4oz, good days fishing and very enjoyable. Fished the first swim near the power lines, lost lots of end tackle due to rocks, my advice would be to use strong main line and end gear at least 8lb and fish well out as large rocks are in near third. Also when playing fish keep rod high to get them back over rocks otherwise they dive straight into them.
tight lines!!

Beat:Skenfrith
Fishing:All Species (in season)

Had a very enjoyable days fishing on this beat. My first time fishing the Monnow. The river was a little low but managed to catch 6 WBT, 2 on dry fly, a tan klinkhammer. Then 4 fishing wet fly on a pheasant tail nymph. All fish about 11 inches and all returned. Will try to come back soon.

Beat:Lower Stanton,Honddu
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Long time since I last fished the Honddu and I did not catch it in the best of conditions, low, very clear and with that cool downstream wind that seems to have been around all season. Very few fish seen rising and not much fly life but I did manage 11 of of the rivers average sized brownies. Most fish in good condition but a couple came in like eels. Nice beat, have not fished it before and I am not sure if I fished it all ,having stopped at a locked gate just above the old bridge.
All fish came to size 16 Para Adams type dry.

Beat:Olchon Brook
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Beautiful day to fish this little stream. Trout into double digits to hand and missed others that were like greased lightning. Most were between 5" to 10" with a few larger ones too. Parachute adams did the business all day. A drop of rain wouldn't hurt but there was enough flow to drift from pool to pool to find them.

An excellent day on the Wye despite higher then would have liked water. Over a dozen trout caught on wet olive flies, most fish around 9" mark, two trout at 15". Plenty of missed takes. Very interesting day. Thank you.

Fishing:Coarse

Second day, different beat. Really liked this attractive stretch, despite very steep foot only access and stile to river bank (why not a gate?) which puts elderly, trolley-encumbered anglers (me!) at risk of cardiac arrest. Managed it, and results well worth the struggle. River fining down, weather hot and bright but barbel, perverse creatures, fed in two concentrated spells at midday and in evening. Seven beautiful, hard-fighting fish betgween 5lb and 9lb, halibut pellets over hemp. Feeding hard when I had to pack up to tackle the great ascent back to car.

I fished the Lower Crai on Sunday - outstanding beat, 16 wbt caught in 3 hours!! It’s very encouraging to see this tributary in such fine shape.
