A very nice day on this little river! First time fishing on the Escley. I'm happy that I still managed to catch two brown trouts - 14inches and 5inches.
Access was a little tricky in some areas, but there was still plenty fishable. Water was quite murky sat. to rain at the weekend. I blanked on trying nymphs (probably bad technique!) but when I did find fish rising little epoxy worked well.

Very attractive beat. Sadly, heavy, overnight rain raised flow level with very coloured water. No hatch observed throughout day. One 5 inch brown trout was the total for the day, caught at around 4pm when the water colour was starting to improve. Taken on a small, black, gold-headed, ribbed nymph. We will be back.

One small 6oz trout (desperate day river very low with a cold North wind and no hatches).

1 x Rainbow trout 1 3/4lb - bottom worm. 1 x Perch 1 1/4lb - bottom worm. 2 x Perch 1lb - bottom worm. 2 x Perch 3/4lb - bottom worm.

One of those 'four seasons in a day' days - there was even a roll of thunder in the afternoon (only the one, mind). The wind was much lighter than had been forecast which made it possible to fish most of the beat comfortably. In between the showers, there were some good hatches, mainly of olives. Fish not showing in great numbers, but enough to give away where to try. They seemed in particularly picky and fickle mood and I lost count of how many were hooked, or part-hooked, and lost. Still, six lovely fish caught. The best was only a tad under two pounds: a real Usk beauty.
By the evening, the rain had set in with a bit more purpose, so I left a little earlier than planned. The only real disappointment was that the Gliffaes Hotel could not fit us in for dinner on the way home. I should have booked when I booked the fishing.
The drive home was through torrential rain and thoroughly unpleasant. I guess it kept up for much of the night because the gauge showed the river much higher. I'm very glad I didn't book for Sunday instead: high water and high winds are not a good mix!

2 Trout Caught on the Penpont beat.

1st - 08oz (est) on a Bead Head Pheasant Tail Nymph
2nd - 4lb (est)on an unweighted GRHE nymph

A beautiful beat in stunning countryside. Very changeable weather throughout the day but fish seen rising from mid morning onwards, failed to bring any to the net however.

Cracking day with a double figure catch of trout, the best was just under 2.5lbs. Some good hatches of Yellow Mays, Medium Olives, Grannom and even some March Browns which the trout hammered.

Fishing was on a cold day. River water dirty but fishable.
Lots of sedge coming off the water throughout the day. Fish didnt seem to be feeding on them. One small brown and 2 salmon parr on bead head nymphs and adams dry.

March Browns coming off water at 3pm when fish turned on for about 25 minutes. 4 browns, 2 of which were a 2.5lb hen and a 1.5 lb cock fish. Best fish I have taken in river.
Great result after a slow start!!

6 Trout 1/2lb - 1lb. Two on nymph (beaded hares ear & pheasant tail) rest on dry fly (grey bodied klinkhammer and parachute adams). Lots hatching between the rain showers.
