Glorious hot sunny day. The water temperature was extremely cold and although we saw the odd Olive hatching around 4 p.m. there were no trout moving to them. We never saw a rise all day, but thoroughly enjoyed our days fishing - we shall be back to renew the challenge!! Stunningly picturesque part of the world.

The day started of badly with one of our party forgetting his wading boots so while we started fishing he made the return journey back to Penarth for said boots (good start).
First fish second cast just below town bridge a superbly spotted brown of 1 1/4lb fell to a tungsten bead black nymph, thoughts of this might be a good day after all started.
Fish were rising to a small hatch of March browns and with this the second fish was hooked fought for a minute and then lost to a knot pulling through, better fish, fury over knot tying. Some people tuned up fishing worms which we did inform was illegal but ignored us and spoilt the pool. The rest of the day didn't turn out to that good with one other small brown taken late in the afternoon. Fished till late hoping for a rise to maybe start but with only a few sporadic rises hunger and the pub got the bettter of us and we called it a day.
There are some very big trout on this beat and would highly recommend it.

This beat in my humble opinion consists of 100m at the top and maybe 75m at the bottom , the rest inaccessible.
Anyway, stunning day, nymphed the fast water and its tail as far as was accesible, to no affect, drifted some dries down the stream formed to the rh side of the island below the bridge pool, no result. Steady olive hatch from 11 am onwards no takers though. Spent a very pleasant hour on the island enjoying the sun and lifting up rocks to improve my knowledge of things that trout should be eating, absolutley teaming with life, some of which resembled stuff in my fly box. Hung around till 12.30 hoping to see some surface activity in the bridge pool, to no avail. Drove back to Kent with a nice tan.

Another cracking day on the river but had to work hard for the fish caught. Had two small trout around 8inches and one good fish of 16inches, again all taken on pheasent tails nymphs. Saw one fish rising in the middle of the beat but put it down with a sloppy cast! There was again a good hatch of large dark olives from midday onwards.

Another fantastic day on the Usk. A heron, dippers, blackbirds, toads, the sound of the river and some LDOs - what more could you want. Clear skies and bright sun conspired to raise the temperature to around 17 degrees. A relatively limited LDO hatch took place from 11.30-15.00 with very few fish responding to the trickle of flies (i.e. rising). However, a few good fish (c.2lb) were pursuaded to take my flies (CDC Olive and weighted PTN (s.16) around 13.00-14.00. Outside the LDO hatch I fished with a Klink trailing a small (s.16-18) heavily weighted nymph which did bring some success. IMHO the key to the Usk, more so than many other rivers, is to make sure you stay well out of trout sight and wade very softly. All in all a great day on a great river - I will be back!
Tight lines all and enjoy the Spring,
Robert

Had a lovely day on Saturday. Fishing wasn't easy, but the quality of the fish was superb. Managed 4 fish, 3 on nymph one on a dry. Best fish about a pound and a half others around the pound mark.
Steady trickle of Large dark olives started about 11:30 peaked around 12:30 and had basically finished by 2pm
I didn't see any granom hatching but late on in the afternoon there were a few fluttering about especially if you disturbed the vegetation in the margins, should be excellent by the end of the week. Met up with Robert a few times during the day and although we didn't fish together exchanged a few flies and chatted about tactics and stuff.
Thanks for organising the day, I still haven't fished about a third of the beat! Will be back for more.

Weather was beautiful, but the water was really rather high and fast moving. Didn´t see anything move all morning. Then in early afternoon had a few knocks on goldhead nymphs and finally took a 1lb trout. In the evening a tiny grayling and another even tinier brown were caught. Great day, but can´t wait to come back at slightly lower, warmer water with more flies hatching.

2 Trout - Brown, kept. Very hot day, many smaller fish seen rising throughout but not taking. Both fish caught around 8.30pm on Yellow bodied "daddy long legs" interpretations.
Once again, very reliable and smooth dealings with the Foundation and would again recommend the beat.
