Really NOT IMPRESSED with this beat.
Went to the beat under my Wild Stream Season permit BUT after walking down to the beat start I was left dismayed at the appalling access!!! I could not get to the water ANYWHERE on the lower half of the beat.
Frustratingly the access on the LEFT bank is VERY GOOD all along the stretch, might I suggest that the foundation negotiate anglers an access on the left bank?
Very disappointed and frustrated. Would have been even more perturbed had I booked and paid for this through the Booking Office.

WUF note - The Wild Streams beats vary considerably from beat to beat. Chanstone Court is a very wild beat but the rewards can be excellent. Anglers are advised to use our Anglers feedback section to research beats before fishing them.

Peering over the brush on the walk down to the start of this beat, can only whet your appetite for the hours ahead. A succession of runs, pool's and glides that would have you reaching for every pattern and rig you could muster, I was not expecting a water like this for some reason.
But, alas you can't have everything. A quite cold drizzly day turned to a down pour with thunder and lightening by 2.45pm, a dampner to say the least. No hatch (really?) no rising trout. Fished with nymphs only to connect with two o/s Grayling at 10/12 ins, quite impressive I thought for a water this size? Both returned with TLC. I'm thinking this beat would be great in the summer but I would imagine the foliage may make things a tad more difficult than this time of year but as I said, you can't have everything.

Fished afternoon only, above bridge. 4 seasons in a day, wind, rain, hail and glimpses of sunshine between the squalls. Water slightly coloured. A few olives seen coming off with the odd rise to the naturals, but was short lived. Fished NZ style, 3 wild browns caught on nymph. Largest circa 12" (very nice fish) and others 8" or so.
Lots of woody debris following recent flooding etc. Bridge needs clearing.

4 trout to hand, but not one of them would tell me where all the grayling were! Ha! I let them go all the same!

River very low and bank had dense vegetation. Only fished for about an hour down stream from the bridge and had 1 small OOS trout on nymph.
Saw a chap in waders whilst returning to the bridge and thought I had some competition - then his mate appeared! Not anglers but Welsh Water surveyors doing river flow measurements. Said the river was in drought and serious rain was needed this winter.

On a pleasant day it was disappointing to find the river low but slightly coloured, and devoid of fly life. Access was a huge problem, with thick vegetation on both banks, over grown trees and cattle gates across the river. My 7 foot rod was probably too long. I managed to rise two fish, miss one and prick the other. I saw two rises in 5 hours, not good even for August. I don't mind not catching anything, but feel frustrated at only fishing for an hour or so due to access problems. Not recommended.

First time on this beat - low and weedy, streamy runs short and pools static. Some pools still too deep for chest waders so also spent time fighting through the bankside vegetation. Some trout rising in the pools saw through my offerings all too easily. Did manage to land 2 at 10" and missed about 5 more, on adams. Not a great day but I'll try this beat again.

Didn't arrive until about 11am and had to leave by 5pm, but the few hours I managed were great fun. This is certainly not a beat for the faint-hearted! Access is pretty tricky in places and even a six foot cane rod feels a bit over-gunned at times. But the six trout I enticed out were in lovely condition, the best around 12 inches. The only downside was that the grass in all the surrounding meadows was throwing off pollen at an alarming rate for a hay fever sufferer. I may try again in September when it's calmed down.
