3 hours afternoon on the lower half. A bit difficult to find the start of the beat as the nettles and weeds are now neck high. The river is in good condition even though quite clear. A few flies and a handful of rises but I stayed with a PTN below a Klink. A few rises to the Klink but no takes. Two small trout and one decent sized one to the PTN, a small grayling took the PTN just before I packed up. All fish live to fight another day.

Looks like I was first to fish for a while. As expected the access is a bit of an obstacle course. But for those who like combat fishing and tree flies there are some lovely trout. Even so very few rising fish for the time of year and poor fly life on a stream that has had an abundance of both. Most year groups represented in the catch - largest 13" deep and round - worth the trip,
Stuck to an adams unless mayfly were seen to be taken.
25 meters above the start of the beat is a small side stream entering on the right it was thick with suspender mud and badly coloured the river downstream. It had cleared a week later (fishing on WSSP) but there was a coating of mud covering the bottom.

Well I thought , it's been a long time since I gave the Dore a bash , so mooched off to the Chanstone Court beat , arriving at nine , reading 16 degrees in my truck by then too !!

Anyway I initially tackled up with a tiny heavy PTN to get down into the deep pools !! Took ages to hook into my first fish !!had a feeling the bottom section has possibly been fished recently , with footprints and disturbed vegetation present !!!

Anyway , when the hapless mayfly started joining the party things livened up but very slowly !! Fish weren't interested in my Mohican mayfly although they hammered a size fourteen Para Adams !! Good takes and some lovely fish in a bag of nine this morning . Another three did slip the barbless hook too !!one was a cracker too !!! Ggggggrrrrrrrrrr !!!!

Fish started looking up properly from one ish !! Shame really as I called it a day at half one ! A fun few hours although this beat does seem messy , unkempt and unloved !!! In fact a real shambles in places if I'm honest !!! Can it be passed on to the Monnow team WUF ????? Needs a dam good haircut and plenty of loping too !!

A fun few hours , good feisty fish and I'm sure if I stayed till five or six I could have doubled the tally ,.but was fun and also frustrating here with the amount of low branches, clambering around debris etc etc!! Be better after a good sort out I'm.sure !!! Be nice to get on the Afon Elan on Thursday,.ahhh bliss ,.open space and no trees !! Lol !! Anyway a fun morning home for a cool amber nectar and I'm.guessing a session with the mower !!!oh joy!!!

Tried the upstream half. More difficult to negotiate the undergrowth than the downstream half . Slightly coloured water. Cold and windy. Tried various nymphs with no result and then saw a rise behind me. Switched to dry and got a take on the first catch - lost it!

First time on this beat. Nice, even if quite overgrown in a few places and some trees down blocking the river. Water was lightly coloured and at a good level. Hatch of blue duns (I think) in early afternoon. A few rising fish. Caught one of these on a dry (CDC pattern) and the other on a PTN. Only managed the downstream half in 4 hours. I will be back to try the upstream half.

7 little brownies to the hand. Well over twice that spat the fly at various stages of the fight. Cold nights, clear days and low water levels made for tough conditions. All fish to weighted nymphs. None rising but moderate fly life. Second time here. Lovely beat to escape the stresses of daily life. Secluded and beautiful.

Beautiful day, weather lovely, water a mite warmer, caught a miller's thumb on a fly, who could have guessed that such a thing was possible! Saw a kingfisher, and a dipper, rescued a healthy ram lamb from an undercut beneath the bank. Watched the first swallows of the year come over with the shepherd later on. Visited Turnastone Church. A grand wee day out.

I fished 12.30 -4.30 along the first section to the bridge. I saw no activity at all and came away having caused little trouble to the fish despite trying various flies. The stretch has some lovely pools but is quite challenging to wade in places but a lovely stretch which I will return to.
