Our second day on this beat. We caught a 2 inch salmon parrr. That was all. No fish or any rises seen. Again a disappointing day.

Great day fishing, lots of grayling once you know where they hide out! One brown trout only. Saw a group of six cormorants in the river, this should be checked out. Maybe the reason why trout very few and between?

A lovely river to fish with plenty of features, pools, glides etc. I needed to keep moving to find the fish and I only saw a few risers. I managed to bring each one up to my small, barbless, dry fly but hooking them and keeping the wild trout on was a different matter. I lost four which shook the hook but landed two grayling, one of which required the use of the scoop net.

Fished the Upper Irfon beat for a couple of hours on the Kilsby House rod. Some lovely water. Many small fish including grayling but most quicker than us! We had a decent trout on for 10 seconds but ended up with two 6” grayling and a salmon parr to hand. Many small grayling in evidence in some parts of the beat which is great news.

Staying at and Fishing the Cwm irfon beat we fished on the Sunday 16th and then again on Wednesday 19th. Myself and friends have fished this beat 5 times in the last 6 years. We rent one of the cottages that Giles and Karin Palmer have at beautiful Cwm Irfon for a week and fish the many waters available in the Upper Wye catchment. For the first couple of years on the Irfon the river seemed bereft of a substantial head of B. Trout and Grayling and was extremely disappointing....but being aware of the work that the Foundation was doing to compensate for the devastating effect of afforestation on the upper Irfon valley we persisted over the years during our visits and a slow but steady improvement was seen in the health of the rivers. This year, fishing in good conditions, reasonable coloured water and with a light upstream breeze we had 9 Brown Trout, numerous Parr and a remarkable 33 Grayling; most of which needed to be brought to hand with a net...a substantial number of the Grayling were in the 1lb to 1.5lb range ( a heavier fish was sadly lost). So the credit that must be given to the Foundation, in my opinion, is immeasurable....a very big pat on the back goes to all who work there. Interestingly the most successful patterns were north country spider patterns ( particularly Partridge and Orange and Snipe and Purple) whereas on the dry front the killer fly was the Dry Simon. Success was also had on the dry with a Black Klinkhammer. We'll be back next year....this I know becuase we've already booked our week in July 2018!!!!

Like all the beats fished during our trip, in dire need of rainfall to bring up the levels. No fish seen.

Beautiful day, great stretch of water. Located fish rising in deep pool so cast dry fly. 3rd cast fish took but lost it almost immediately. Eventually retiring to the car for lunch but unfortunately watched a cormorant land right by the pool! We returned to fishing, disturbing the cormorant. No fish spotted thereafter. No signs of fish whatever, seen the rest of the day!!!

A pleasant few hours on a lovely stretch of water. There was little surface activity so fished with nymphs and spiders. Most of the fish came from the faster water towards the heads of the pools.
