Difficult as yesterday. One or two fish going up. Finally found the fish and lost two, first on a drowned dry, second on a nymph chucked into the froth. Big heavy headshakes threw the hook the first time. Second time the same solid headshakes and then I'm almost giving line and the fish comes up - it's a proper one - swings across and plunges away while I faff around with the net and then this big brown trout - probably not as big as I first thought but big, big for here - comes up from under this step in the rock and the hook pops and I swear very very loudly.

Even trickier than last month with the water low and slow and the fish wired in. Very low, very clear. Plenty of fish about, some not feeding, some in the deeper pools busier. Felt very unskilful going up, lost a few, caught a few, most small. Mad five minutes in faster water at very last light. Generally: Parachute Adams getting a lot of false rises and attacks.

Grateful for the weekend rain restoring this stream to a very fishable height. Very little fly life and consequently very few fish rising. Persisted with a dry fly (Iron Blue and Adams Para, everything barbless), casting at likely fish holding spots. Managed 8 wbt, all over 8" and one handsome fish of around 15". All fish returned safely.

River low and clear but fish were occasionally rising in the first pool but I could not tell what for. Decided to stick with dry fly, a tiny tups indispensable. Attracted no interest in the almost static pools, I guess even the light leader was easily visible. However, fish were willing in the streamy and fast runs - landed 6 to 11”, and missed many more. A lovely day working upstream.

River was very low meaning the trout had eyes in the back of their heads. But a stealthy approach eventually brought rewards. The top section of the beat in particular had a few feeding trout in the deeper pools. 14 fish in all: about half small but also some bigger ones up to a gnats short of a pound. A vintage day of fishing a very beautiful beat.

A couple of hours on the Edw with AP. Water cool and shaded, a tad low but fishable. Plenty of fish 5 to 11 inches. One surprise monster of 15 inches on virtually the last cast! Brilliant stream.
