Area:Upper Wye

Beat:Llynfi Dulas Lower

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Bright and sunny afternoon, fished upstream of caravan sight as access to stream at confluence was rather tricky.
Saw only one fish rise despite abundant fly life including a steady trickle of Mayfly. Caught two wbt to weighted gold headed ptn the smallest of which was only four times bigger than the hook.
Access to the top half of the fishery was almost impossible due to the presence of large fallen trees and very deep water.

Great variety of flies hatching as well as terrestials but no consistent rise all the time I was there, just the odd one in some pools. Stuck with the Para Adams to tease out 6 at 6" to 9", no sign of the weightier brownies. Biggest sparrowhawk I've seen worked the field next to me for a while, successfully of course. Also, the caravan/campsite at the start of the beat now covers 3 fields so I left that stretch to the many kids and dogs.

If I had not pre-booked, pre-planned and pre-paid this particular day to fish the Llynfi Dulais I would have stayed in the hotel bar! The weather was atrocious with 20mph wind (gusting to 30mph) and bouts of heavy rain.
However, this small venue provided a very enjoyable experience. The first 50 metres were quite difficult to fish due to tree overhangs, branches and high banks but small brown trout were teased out of the shallow riffles with gold head PTNs.
Fished upstream with a simple flick of the short leader (heavier than normal due to the strong, gusting wind) allowed the weighty nymphs enough time to sink and search the turbulent water.
Having spotted a couple of rising fish I changed to a 'high vis' Klinkhammer and added the PTN as a dropper from the point fly (New Zealand style). This was a good move as 50% of the fish caught came up to the dry fly - As we all know, this is what it's all about!
Water levels were high and moving fast but after a slow start I enjoyed 5 hours of wild stream fishing (I had to rush the last part) and managed 13 fish (the largest being 5.5 inches). So much fun that I forgot about the poor weather!
All fish returned.
NB.1. This beat is best fished by wading upstream.
NB.2. Please add a marker or illustrate on the map where the beat ends - It's not that easy to find!

Last year I seem to remember the precipitation trigger was someone washing their car in Milton Keynes. Well this year its me booking fishing. It started just as we were leaving Churchdown at 1.30pm and grew throughout the afternoon/evening - but no more than nusiance initially. Llynfi Dulas is challenging small stream fishing and initially at least it lived up to this. Its a very different game to main river fishing particularly in the low and clear water that currently exists. Stealth and accuracy are mandatory. We got it right for the first hour or so and netted 6 brownies between 3 and 13" - all lovely colourful and plump fish, there must have been a good mayfly hatch - in fact a few that hadnt got a calendar this year were still hatching along with olives of various hues and sizes. The fish do not allow the luxury of a second cast - either its take the ginger quill first cast or they are gone, great fishing! But by 5pm the rain increased and dampened their - and our - enthusiasm. We do need some serious rain to top up the rivers soon though. Oh - evidence of worming/spinning tackle hanging from the trees on the caravan site stretch.

Two of us shared the rod picking the hottest day for a while. Flies hatching all day including the occasional may but few fish rising. Managed 10 fish to hand and as many hooked and lost, some right at the feet. About half the fish were year 2 generation, but two or three were reasonable 8"-10" specimens. But we lost two nice fish - one right at the net of 1.5 lbs and another of similar size. Some to dries but mostly to duo taking bead head nymphs sizes 12 - 16.
This is a beat long enough for a day's fishing if taken steadily. Needs a bit of clearance from new growth encroaching and from a large number of large fallen trees - sufficient to require you to leave the river in places. However there are still a very good number of fishable pools.
A smart phone with good signal is required to locate the top of the beat (if there is a sign it is not easily spotted). The entirety of the beat is enclosed by barbed wire fencing. There are insufficient crossing points and the long trudge back to the parking point could ruin a nice day. Exiting at a stile at the top of the beat you cannot progress through the fields due to field boundaries (and a bull) meaning that for much of the return there is no option but to wade the river. Just as well we finished before dusk. Minor points which if addressed would greatly improve the day.

Glorious weather at last, my first time on this beat. Started on a nymph and pulled out of a couple of trout in the first half hour, along by the caravan site. Plenty of fly life including Iron Blues and even a couple of Mayflies (the first I've seen this year). Finished the day having caught three wbt, largest 8 inches, all on a Greenwell's Glory. A very enjoyable day on a beat worth returning to.
