Beat:Lugg Pilleth

Fishing:Trout (River)

Used a small nymph in morning and with a few LDO's in afternoon switched to dry fly - but nothing seen or caught.
River very clear and low for March and water cold.
Probably too early in season for the upper Lugg beats.

Fished for four and a half hours in the afternoon from the small bridge upstream to the top of the beat. Mild with sun and cloud. Water very low despite recent rain. 9 trout to about 9 inches caught on cdc dry flies.

Water level quite high. Kept having to get out of the river to progress, barbed wire played havoc with my waders. Lots of mayfly around midday. As a first experience of the Wild Stream permit it was a wonderful day out. Will return with a shorter rod.

I arrived at the river at about 12pm on a warm sunny day, with the weather becoming much more overcast and windier as the day went on with several brief showers. Water running low and clear.
I decided to fish dry fly only, catching ten trout to about 9 inches on Klinkhammer, CDC & Elk and Olive Comparadun flies. There was a small trickle of olives during the day and several Mayfly began appearing around 5pm as I was getting ready to leave. Very difficult to avoid spooking the trout in the low clear tails of the pools who would then shoot upstream disturbing more fish. Most fish were caught in slack water adjacent to faster currents.
I fished the bottom half of the beat which seems to have suffered quite a bit over the winter with several fallen trees and collapsed banks. I also had a couple of narrow escapes with hidden barbed wire in the undergrowth/bankside which I don't remember being there last year.

5 trout to 8" and bumped a few, GRHE nymph under a Parachute Adams, caught on both. Lovely day, the only thing that got me down slightly was 50% of likely looking runs were too overgrown to throw a line at. I suggest we all carry a small pocket coppicing saw and have a go ourselves and open up a bit more fishing for us all?

WUF note - We have a team of dedicated Wild Streams maintenance staff who are responsible for 'trimming' these beats. It may be at the request of the owner that some beats are more overgrown than others so please refrain from carrying out any beat maintenance without contacting the Foundation first.

Lots of fish seen but I found it very difficult to avoid spooking them with the very low water. 2 trout caught on tungsten bead PTN and 1 on a cdc dry fly.
