Sadly, another blank. Didn't see any rising fish today but did see a lot of trout in several places from 5/6 to 10 inches. Some were in shoals of up to 10 fish of various sizes. At one point I was in a pool, waist height, and fish were swimming by me almost oblivious to my presence. I had already tried drys here earlier so changed to nymphs, Tried several patterns and shrimps and got some casual glances but no takers. It was amazing to see them at such close range. Spoke to a local near my accommodation who said they had been on a reservoir day before, fish jumping out taking flies on the wing but wouldn't touch anything they offered. At least it wasn't just me!!

Water level quite low. Few fish rising in pools. Only had one take on a parachute adams but didn't hook it. Nothing caught but very nice to be there.

River very clear but with still a good flow in most pools. I struggled, dour is the word I think. Landed 2 (7") on small nymph but saw little else. Maybe the evening would be better? Checked the catch returns and most do seem to find it hard work on this beat. Wonder why, it has some lovely runs and lively pools.

Staying at Little Oasis Pandy just across the road from the beat - highly recommended. Beat access nice and easy, but was only able to fish just up past the footbridge due to cattle in the stream. 1x wbt 8" followed shortly after by 2x energetic 10" grayling from deeper pools. All took a green jig nymph with a purple hotspot.

A cold day for the time of year, few rising trout. Saw no rising fish in the morning. And fell in, so had to return to my van on the caravan site in Pandy for dry clothes, and a snooze. Went back later, saw a few rising fish and managed to catch one trout, 7 inches. Lost a second, missed a few more.

1 x 7 inch trout, Goldbead Hare's Ear, first of the season. Well, I would have wished to be out on the Usk today, but there was too much water coming down it for my liking. There was plenty of cold water tumbling down the Honddu from the Black Mountains also, although it was certainly fishable. However, I suspect all the little trout except this one were still tucked up in bed and perhaps I should have been. What a strange spring! It was snowing hard while I was fishing a lake yesterday, although the rainbows were really going for it. Today I saw marsh-marigolds in full bloom in a Monmouthshire bog, which is at least 6 weeks early. Some hawthorn hedges near Abergavenny are already in leaf.
