On the river Greta, a tributary of the Tees, Greta Farm offers approx. 1.6m (2.7km) of excellent virgin wild brown trout fishing with the real chance of a sea trout. The first section is approximately from the meeting of waters between the Greta and Sleightholme Beck, downstream for just under 1 mile (1.6km) some of which is double bank. This is a lovely piece of water with a real character. It is easily accessible and sensible to wade. All the fishing on the top section is not interrupted by trees and you always generally have a good background when casting. The second section is from the main bridge below Bowes village downstream for just over 0.5 miles (1.1km). This section is much harder to fish, the first initial 0.5km section is heavily tree lined, but the final section is much easier to fish. The wading is tricky and it is overgrown.
These sections of the Greta are superb. It fishes very well even in very low summer levels, with the pools naturally filing up with free rising trout. If the summer has been wet there is real chance of a sea trout from August onwards, but sea trout will be present at the back end. EA & Tees Rivers Trust monitoring results have shown good numbers of sea trout in the upper Greta.
The fishing at Greta Farm is FLY ONLY, barbless hooks and strictly catch and release.
Wading on these beats is of average difficulty and a wading staff is advisable. Please take care when near the steep sides of the river bank. There is bedrock present, so please mindful of shelves.
There may be electric fences present and livestock in the fields.
For brown trout on the main river, all the water fishes exceptionally well with spiders, nymphs, but especially well with the dry fly. Fishing with a 7ft to 8ft rod, line rating #3/4 is the perfect choice of rod. For sea trout a slightly larger rod will be useful, and low water doubles and singles such as Stoats Tails should work well.
