A few mayfly about but almost zero interest from the fish.

Dry and wet flies. River possibly on the low side, lots of fry in margins . Staying at The Old Vicarage

Nothing at all very poor

Fished 2.30- 8.30 with the gauge at 10” so unsurprisingly, no salmon caught or seen. Some good trout fishing though, most of the fish being caught in the evening above the bridge. There were a lot of small yellow mays on the water followed by a spinner fall which got the trout looking up. May have been a few BWO’s late on as well.

A very welcomed first fish of the season , been in the river a week or two! Fished the pool with a fly nothing, then went through the pool with a rapala! 16lb hen fish

Despite plenty of fly life including lots of yellow May duns not many risers. Even a E. danica sailed down unmolested. Lots of birds taking advantage including redstart, wagtails and dippers. Also a family of Mandarin ducks! Gave up on the dries and caught 2 to Klink and dink. Late afternoon numbers of trout began rising in slow featureless water. Good ones too! But so tricky to get to. Battled the undergrowth and trees to finally get one on a small olive( the trout were taking something very small I couldn’t see). Had to leave but I think the evening would have been good. Given the nature of the banks and high vegetation I would say this beat might require some agility and sweat come high summer. Plenty of fish though and lovely to see them.

Cold wind blowing downstream most of day but several fish caught all on dries.
