One good trout at 10 inches to a PTN in one of the deeper gutters. Steady trickle of mayfly coming off.

My first time on this beat. A beautiful stretch of river with lots of interest for the WBT fly fisher. Given that Brecon centre is relatively close, beat feels very peaceful and remote. River at summer levels (showing 5" on Brecon gauge). Bright sunshine with a gentle upstream breeze. Steady hatch of olives throughout the day. Some fish dimpling the surface on the flats. Mostly fry - but you never can be sure, so spent an unsuccessful hour or so covering them. Switched to a PT nymph fished in the creases of the faster water. Several missed takes. When the occasional mayfly came off, switched to a Richard Walker mayfly nymph, again fished in the margins of the fresh water. Two lovely WBT to the net. Two important points: wading is very tricky even in low water conditions. The flat slabs of bedrock are like a skating rink. Felt soles are highly desirable; secondly, parking at the three designated spots is problematic. Even with one car, was difficult to get off the farm track without blocking access to the farm gates.

Weather as before: blazing sunshine for most of the day. Also as before had to leave before the evening rise. Still managed one trout, not huge, on an emerger in a slow pool. Did not make it to the top of the beat because disinclined to wade round too many field gates fortified with barbed wire.

Fished Chainbridge for the afternoon. Only a handful of fish were rising given the bright sun. Managed three, on mayfly duns.

Good evening fishing. Nothing happened until about 7pm and then there were a good number of fish rising, mainly to egg-laying mayfly and yellow mays.

River very low and a really hot day but I managed to catch a few nice trout and a grayling. Traditional nymphing methods using a very long leader and a hot spot PTN were successful. No interest on any of my dropper offerings, spiders, or on various dry flies. An enjoyable day on this well maintained and attractive beat.

Arrived at river having seen off a field full of young bullocks… there was plenty of insect life with a lot of yellow may duns and sedges in the air, fish were rising sporadically. We had a few but 7 o’clock came and decision time … stay or go? Cloud cover had increased throughout the afternoon so we gambled and stayed …. To witness one of the most wonderful spinner falls seen on the Wye with mayflies, olives and yellow May duns dancing …. Sedges and stoneflies too. The fish were impressed too … we ended up with 24, a good mix of year classes for the trout , best one a stunning 17 incher. JB briefly contacted a shad … can’t wait till the grayling re-appear in numbers too. Saw a mink and otter… what a wonderful day, thank you Wye and Usk !
