River condition - relatively low and running clear. Noticeable algal growth on all rocks on slower flowing areas, indicative of excessive nitrates and phosphates from sewage inflow or agricultural run-off. No Ranunculus growth apparent anywhere.

During the day, very few / no flies emerging and no rising fish seen. Very disappointing. Around dusk a few upwings hatching (including mayflies, large dark olives, yellow may duns and brook duns) and sporadic rising fish.

3 brown trout caught on dry fly - 2 x approx 1/2lb, 1 x approx 1.25lbs (all returned).

The first time we had thought the Wye fishable for us trout ticklers this year…. Turns out the river was lower than expected. The walk from the car park through the wood down to the river was stunning with wild flowers out.

Getting down to the river the first job was to release the female yellow may dun from the spiders web on the entry gate. Fish were rising on the tail of Bachawy pool so in I went whilst JB went off upstream to fish Ciliau run up by the hut.

I rose 4 fish to a size 14 dun parachute but not one of them stuck! Got out after an hour or so and went up to see how the competition was doing. 3 trout to hand… but fish were still rising yet apparently uncatchable. We sat down to work out what was happening… we had seen occasional mayflies plus yellow may duns, olives and what I suspect were autumn duns… but less conspicuous were the pale wateries. I had just the fly in my box so on went the size 16 yellow bodied pale dun parachute … and 3 of the uncatchable fish were undone! Two came to hand, the third one having shown me what a nice fat fit fish he was took me around a rock and broke me.

The cloud broke to clear sunshine by the middle of the afternoon and that put an end to rising fish. We had anticipated being pestered by OOS grayling but only one showed up, an immaculate 15 incher. All the trout were fat strong and powerful … 7 fish between 8 and 15 inches was a fair day.

Great to see a shoal of shad showing off in Armies pool too … subtle they are not!

Thank you for advice on the telephone pointing me and my friend to available fishing at late notice.
Fish were rising throughout the beat and three were caught early to mid-afternoon, the best being about a pound and a quarter. All were taken on dry fly.
